Quedlinburg Ital

"Quedlinburg Itala" ( Sigla Cod. Theol. Lat. Fol. 485 ) - a fragment of an illuminated manuscript of the fifth century containing an old Latin translation of the Bible . The oldest antique illuminated manuscript that has survived to this day. The surviving fragments contain fragments of the Book of Kings and the Book of Samuel . Fragments of the manuscript - only 6 sheets - were discovered in 1865-1887 in the binding of various manuscripts from Quedlinburg Abbey . The illustrations are surrounded by frames, sometimes from two to five thumbnails could be placed on the page; a total of 14 images survived. Only one sheet is occupied by the entire text. According to the calculations of V. G. Borukhovich , if the manuscript included the entire text of the Bible, it should have been at least 11 volumes, each of which had 220 sheets [1] .

The thumbnails were poorly preserved, so under the showered paint came out technical notes intended for illustrator, which usually included the plot of the image and some details that needed to be displayed. This, apparently, indicates that the illustrations were original, intended specifically for this instance and were not copied from earlier images. The number of miniatures exceeds any other biblical manuscript; their style resembles the Vatican Virgil and the mosaics of Santa Maria Maggiore .
