
World Press Freedom Day de la presse ) - celebrated annually on May 3 since 1994 . It is proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in a special resolution of December 20, 1993 (Resolution No. A / DEC / 48/432).
The decision on this World Day was made on the recommendation of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) - resolution No. 1993/54. In turn, ECOSOC was guided by the decision of the 26th session of the UNESCO General Conference of November 6, 1991. At this conference, UNESCO recommended the date of May 3 as the date of adoption of the Windhoek Declaration , adopted at a seminar on the development of an independent African press held in 1991 in Windhoek .
Annually published messages of the UN Secretary General on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day . The 2006 message, in particular, said that the media should not serve as an instrument of incitement, degradation or hate speech.
Since 1997, on May 3, a UNESCO Prize has been awarded annually for contributions to freedom of the press.
