He pursued a policy of patronage to large landowners and American companies, especially the United Fruit Company , in exchange for US support for his regime. Deposed in 1944 as a result of the Guatemalan revolution , fled the country.
Biography
He served in the army, with the rank of general. He came to power as a result of a military coup.
Having come to power, Ubiko donated a number of lands to the American agrarian company United Fruit Company and granted a number of other concessions to American capital. He pursued a policy of mass repression against dissidents. Under him, a ban was imposed on all workers' organizations, and the Law on Vagabonds was passed in 1934, according to which the homeless had to work for hire 180 days a year. In 1944, Ubiko gave landowners the right to shoot anyone who ends up on their land without permission [1] .
In June 1944, students, teachers, etc., dissatisfied with the rule of Ubiko took to the streets of the capital. He was overthrown, and wanting to leave the levers of power in his hands, put his man on the post of president, and then fled the country to Mexico [1] . On October 20, 1944, the inhabitants of the country again took to the streets of Guatemala and demanded radical changes. Juan Arevalo became president, and then Jacobo Arbens .
Mentioned in the novel by Miguel Angel Asturias "Eyes of the Buried"
Two years after the overthrow, Ubiko died in New Orleans in the United States .
