Player Career
Todd Richards was drafted in 1985 . He also played four seasons for a hockey team from the University of Minnesota.
The first club in his professional career was Sherbrooke Canadiens, which happened in the AHL in the 1989/90 season. The next season, he moves to Springfield Indian , which was the Hartford Whalers farm club, and in 1991 helps Springfield win the Calder Cup . Also this season, he played 2 matches in the NHL for the Hartford Whalers, in which he made 4 assists. Todd played two seasons for Springfield Indian, after which he played for the Las Vegas Thunder from the International Hockey League (IHL). After spending two seasons there, Todd moved to another club in the IHL - Orlando Solar Bears, where he spent six full seasons. And in 2002, he completed his hockey career in the club of the Swiss National League , Geneva-Servette .
Coach Career
After the player’s career ended, Todd Richards became an assistant coach at Milwaukee Admirals , where in 2004 he won the Calder Cup .
On August 3, 2006, Todd Richards became just the fifth head coach in the history of Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins . In the first season with the new coach, Wilkes-Barre / Scranton won 51 victories with 24 defeats and finished second in the East Division. In the playoffs of the Calder Cup, Richards wards lost in the final of the Hershey Bears division.
In the 2008/09 season, Todd became an assistant coach at San Jose Sharks .
In June 2009, Todd became the head coach for the second time in his career, leading the Minnesota Wild . This is the first time in the history of Minnesota when a national specialist is at the helm of a team. In the two years spent at Minnesota, Richards won 77 wins with 71 defeats, and was dismissed on April 11, 2011 [1] .
In June 2011, Todd Richards became assistant to the head coach of Columbus Blue Jackets Scott Arniel [2] . After a bad first half of the 2011/12 season, Arniel was fired [3] , and Richards took over [2] .
On April 19, 2014, Richards and the Blue Jackets won their first Stanley Cup playoff victory in franchise history. Then the Pittsburgh Penguins was defeated with a score of 4-3 [4] .
On April 23, 2014, Richards and the Blue Jackets won their first home win in the Stanley Cup playoffs in franchise history [5] .
On May 27, 2014, Richards signed a new two-year contract with Columbus before the end of the 2016/17 season [6] . On October 20, 2015, he was dismissed from his post as head coach of Columbus [7] .
