Leontiev, Leopold Igorevich

Leopold Igorevich Leontyev was born on December 1, 1934 in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg ). In 1957 he graduated from the Ural Polytechnic Institute named after S. M. Kirov with a degree in metallurgical engineering. In the same year, he joined the Institute of Metallurgy of the Ural Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences , where he went from a senior laboratory assistant to the director of the institute. In 1983 he defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences (topic - “Theoretical and technological foundations of metallurgical processing of complex iron ore raw materials” ) ^[1] .

On December 15, 1990, he was elected a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (since 1991 - RAS ), and on May 29, 1997 - a full member of the RAS in the Department of Physical Chemistry and Technology of Inorganic Materials. In 1997-1998, he was the 1st Deputy Chairman of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences . Since 1998 - Director of the Property Management Agency of the Russian Academy of Sciences; Since 1999 - Member of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences ^[1] .

In 1993-1996 he worked as the 1st Deputy Minister of Science and Technical Policy of the Russian Federation . Since 1998 - Institute of Metallurgy, Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences ^[1] .

He is actively engaged in teaching: in 1987-1998 he was a professor, head of the department of metallurgical faculty of USTU-UPI, and since 1998 - professor of the department of ore thermal processes of the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys .

Since 2015 - chief editor of the journal Izvestiya Vysshikh Uchebnykh Zavedenii. Ferrous metallurgy ” ^[2] .

The areas of scientific interests of L.I. Leontyev include: physical chemistry and technology of metallurgical processes , complex processing of natural and technogenic raw materials, research in the field of composition, structure and properties of metals , oxides , composite materials . Under his leadership ^[3] :

• The theoretical foundations of energy and resource-saving technologies for processing complex ores containing iron, vanadium, titanium, chromium, nickel, aluminum, magnesium and other components have been developed;
• the conditions for the formation of environmentally hazardous compounds ( nitrogen oxides , furans , dioxins ) are determined and the parameters of metallurgical processes that minimize the formation of such compounds during the processing of toxic materials are justified;
• a universal technology for processing various types of waste using pyrometallurgical processes was developed and tested;
• Studies on the processing of metal phases in oxide matrices have been carried out.

L.I. Leontyev is the author of more than 400 scientific papers and more than 80 patents for inventions. Under his scientific supervision 7 candidates of sciences were trained; two of his students defended doctoral dissertations ^[3] .
