The 26th reserve fighter aviation regiment dates back to July 1938, when the 40th reserve aviation regiment was formed at the Kirovo airfield of the Kiev Special Military District (KOVO). As a result of the offensive of the fascist-German invaders, the 40th reserve aviation regiment was withdrawn to Georgia at the Sandar airfield (near Tbilisi) in August 1941 and was subordinate to the Air Force headquarters of the Transcaucasian Front .
In January 1942, the 40th reserve aviation regiment was renamed to the 26th reserve fighter aviation regiment on the basis of the NCO directive and became part of the 4th spare aviation brigade in Tbilisi, with the 31st aircraft factory re-deployed in evacuation (brigade commander Colonel Kretov )

Pilot Training
The process of retraining flight crews was typical: a regiment was withdrawn from the front that lost a large number of flight crews, it was replenished to full-time standards, pilots were retrained for a new material part. The regiment received new planes and again went to the front. Thus, the reserve regiment distributed planes arriving from factories and repair bases.
In order to gain combat experience, the command and instructors of the reserve aviation regiments were sent to the aviation regiments of the army.
