Christian Metz ( French: Christian Metz ) ( December 12, 1931 , Beziers , France - September 7, 1993 , Paris , France ) - French film theorist and film - semiotic , a leading representative of non-classical French cinema aesthetics. He was best known as the developer of the structural-psychoanalytic theory of cinema, based on the semiotic theory of Ferdinand de Saussure , the psychoanalysis of Sigmund Freud and the mirror theory of Jacques Lacan . Throughout the 1970s his scientific work was a significant contribution to the theory of cinema in France, Great Britain, the USA and Latin America.

Born December 12, 1931 in Beziers .
He studied ancient history and classical languages at the Higher Normal School , and also received a doctorate in general linguistics at the Sorbonne .
He taught at the Higher School of Social Sciences .
September 7, 1993 committed suicide .
