Biography

The representative of the Pomeranian dynasty Grifichy . The youngest (sixth) son of the Duke of Stettins Bohuslav XIII (1544-1606) from his first marriage with Clara Braunschweig-Luneburg (1550-1598). In 1606, after the death of his father, Bohuslav XIII, Ulrich did not receive any land holdings, he received only annual rent.

In 1618, the childless Duke of Stettin Philip II , the elder brother of Ulrich , died. His other brother, Franz , Bishop of Cumminsky , inherited the Ducal throne of Stettins , transferring to Ulrich the posts of Bishop of Cumminsky and Prince Szczecinecki. June 26, 1618 Ulrich Pomeransky joined the rank of Bishop of Kamminskogo .

In 1621, Ulrich received possession of the cities of Darlowo and Bukovo from his older brother Bohuslav XIV .

Ulrich was a very educated prince. He studied at the Rostock and Tübingen universities , knew French well . In his youth, he traveled a lot, visited Italy, France, England and the Netherlands .

From the preserved historical documents it follows that Prince Ulrich attended official events held by his older brothers, and did not avoid entertainment. In 1612 and 1617, Ulrich participated in shooting competitions, won the main prizes in Szczecin . He loved to hunt.

In the autumn of 1622, Ulrich fell seriously ill during his stay in Szczecin , but despite his poor health decided to return to Darlowo . Along the way, his condition suddenly worsened, and the trip was interrupted in Psibernuv , where he died. His body was buried on January 8, 1623 in the palace church of St. Otto in Szczecin . His possessions and the position of bishop of Kamminsky were inherited by his elder brother Bohuslav XIV .

The sudden illness and death of Ulrich contributed to the suppression of the Grifich dynasty, since only from his marriage could one hope for posterity: two of the surviving princes, Boguslav XIV of Szczecin and Philip Julius Volgast , had been married for a long time and had no children.

Marriage

On February 7, 1619, at Wolfenbüttel, Ulrich Pomeransky married Gedwig Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttelskaya (February 9, 1595 - June 26, 1650), daughter of the Duke of Heinrich Julius Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttelsky (1564-1613) from his second marriage with Elizabeth of Denmark (1573). Their marriage was childless. After the death of her husband, Gedwig lived in Szczecinek ( Neustettin ). Here in 1640 she founded a gymnasium , which after her death began to be called her name.
