Biography

Born in the family of a pastor. He graduated from high school in Zurich, after which he studied Roman philology and the history of the Middle Ages at the universities of Bonn and Zurich. In 1857 in Zurich he defended his doctoral dissertation. From 1867 he was a professor of Romance languages ​​at the University of Berlin and worked in this institution until the end of his life. Since 1875 he was a member of the Roman Academy, in 1881 he became a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .

The main focus of Tobler's scientific research was the study of Old French and Occitan syntax; many of their phenomena were first described by him. Major works: “Darstellung der lateinischen Konjugation und ihrer romanischen Gestaltung” (Zurich, 1857); "Bruchstücke aus dem Chevalier au lyon" (Solothurn, 1862); “Mitteilungen aus altfranzösischen Handschriften” (Leipzig, 1870); “Die Parabel von dem echten Ring” (Leipzig, 1884); “Vom französischen Versbau alter und neuer Zeit” (Leipzig, 1894); “Vermischte Beiträge zur französischen Grammatik” (Leipzig, 1886 and 1894); “Li proverbe ou villain” (Leipzig, 1895). All the works of Tobler already in the XIX century were highly appreciated for their thoroughness.

His brother, Ludwig Tobler (June 1, 1827 - August 19, 1895), was a professor of German philology at the University of Zurich .; the main work: “Ueber die Wortzusammensetzung” (Berlin, 1868), also published Swiss folk songs (Frauenfeld, 1882–1884) and, together with Staub, “Schweizerische Idiotikon” (Frauenfeld, 1885).
