“Dubrovsky” is an opera by the Russian composer E. F. Napravnik in four acts on the libretto by M. I. Tchaikovsky , written based on the novel by A. S. Pushkin . The opera premiered on January 3, 1895 in St. Petersburg at the Mariinsky Theater .

Story
1 action
The action takes place at the beginning of the XIX century . Vladimir returns to Kistenevka, the estate of Dubrovsky. His sick father talks about human injustice: the old Dubrovsky was offended by the courtyard general Troekurov, his former friend. To the request to punish the serf, the general answered with a daring mockery. In addition, Troekurov is trying with all his might to take away the Dubrovsky house. Vladimir takes an oath to answer the offender. At this time, Troekurov arrives with the news that the estate does not belong to Dubrovsky anymore. But meanwhile, the general apologizes and offers a truce. Pride does not allow the old man to forgive Troekurov, and he drives him away. After a while, Dubrovsky dies. The peasants, who returned from the master’s funeral, observe a terrifying picture: those who arrived at the estate and the assessors are having fun. Vladimir dissuades the peasants from revenge, but soon he decided to reprisal. He makes a difficult decision: to burn the parental home.
2 action
Forest Glade. Masha, the daughter of Troekurov, picks mushrooms. The girl sincerely sympathizes with Dubrovsky and does not consider him a criminal. She swears that she would try by all means to return Vladimir to normal life. Dubrovsky had already intended to steal Masha with the aim of revenge, but now confidently abandons his intention. Vladimir’s friends are robbers who bring the captured Frenchman Deforge. He talks about the fact that Troekurov invited him to his place as a teacher. Autumn Vladimir offers the Frenchman for a large sum of money to give documents and return to their homeland. Deforge agrees, and Vladimir immediately goes to the Troekurov estate.
3 action
Dubrovsky is engaged in music with Masha. Suddenly, Prince Vereisky appears. Troekurov informs him of the teacher’s heroic deed: Deforge, hitting a bear’s cage, killed a beast with one shot from a revolver . Masha is astounded. The father informs his daughter of the prince's proposal to marry him. The girl asks to refuse Vereisky, but her father is adamant. Suddenly a stone flies into the room with a note that Deforge will try to help the girl. Masha has a deep feeling for her teacher.
4 action
The engagement of Masha and the prince is celebrated in the park. A police officer appears with the news that the robber Dubrovsky is hiding somewhere nearby. But this does not frighten the owner of the estate. Suddenly, the police officer expresses the idea that Vladimir is hiding under the mask of a Frenchman and decides to expose the robber. Dubrovsky, learning about this, says goodbye to Masha and reveals all the secrets. The girl also confesses love to Vladimir. A whistle is heard interrupting the date. Dubrovsky is trying to escape, but he is mortally wounded. A girl in despair approaches her lover.

Creation History
The opera Dubrovsky was completed in 1894. Soon after the premiere, it was staged in many cities of Russia and abroad.
The opera was created based on the novel of the same name by Pushkin, and the Tchaikovsky libretto almost completely repeats its plot. There are only a few differences. For example, Vladimir meets a Frenchman in a forest, not a hotel. The finale of the libretto is significantly changed, and the characteristics of individual characters differ.
