Biography
Born in Moscow. The family first lived on Palihe Street (d. No. 8), then on Arbat [1] . He was the only child in the family. Parents had no relation to art. Mother was a doctor, father an economist, collaborated with an organization that corresponded with foreign countries, often brought home various exotic brands that, according to Leonid, played a big role in his fate. He considered them for a long time, then studied the countries from which they were sent, broadened his horizons and tried to draw on his own [2] .
He studied at school number 110 . His classmates were the sons of Sergei Yesenin , Demyan Poor , Otto Schmidt . Leonid already at school was actively fond of drawing, took part in the publication of a wall newspaper. In the tenth grade, my father advised me seriously to choose a profession and enter the Civil Engineering Institute, which Leonid did [2] .
With the outbreak of World War II, Vladimirsky was admitted to the military engineering academy, having managed to graduate from three courses of the Moscow Civil Engineering Institute (IISS) . There he studied for a year and with the rank of lieutenant was sent to the front in the engineering troops. By his own admission, he did not perform any feats, he was engaged in the construction and restoration of bridges and roads for passing parts. Demobilized in 1945 with the rank of senior lieutenant [2] .
After the war, he entered the art department of the Institute of Cinematography ( VGIK ), department of animation . His teachers were Grigory Shegal , Fedor Bogorodsky , Yuri Pimenov . In parallel, he had to feed his family - by then Leonid was already married, moreover, his wife was ill with tuberculosis. He earned money by painting oilcloths by order of the villagers. Unlike many fellow students, he did not have artistic training, which did not prevent him from graduating with honors from college. The first film in the history of VGIK film “Ruslan and Lyudmila” became the thesis. For him, Vladimirsky made 80 color drawings and shot them on film. He was noticed and invited to work as the main artist at the filmstrip studio, where for three years he created a series of 400 illustrations for 10 films [2] .
The second wife is Svetlana Alekseevna Kovalskaya, an artist and painter, 27 years younger. Both were widowers and did not play a wedding. Nevertheless, they lived in their happy marriage for 30 years. The daughter was a model for Pinocchio, and later - Ellie ("The Wizard of the Emerald City").
In recent years, Leonid Viktorovich and his wife lived in the city of Dolgoprudny . He was buried at Vostryakovsky cemetery .
Works
In 1953, for the film “The Adventures of Pinocchio ”, based on a fairy tale by A. N. Tolstoy, the artist created his own image of a wooden hero in a striped cap - an image that has become well-known and considered classical. According to Leonid Viktorovich, Tolstoy himself dreamed of a filmstrip in his book, specially prepared a text for him, but did not live to see the premiere [2] . After the publication of the book “The Adventures of Pinocchio” in the publishing house “Art” in 1956, Vladimirsky devoted himself to illustrating books for children. The next well-known work of the artist was illustrations for six fairy tales by A. Volkov , the first of which was “ The Wizard of the Emerald City ” was published in 1959 (the program “ Why and Why ” is dedicated to the history of the creation of the fairy tale).
Among the artist's works are illustrations for the poem by A. S. Pushkin “ Ruslan and Lyudmila ”, to the story of Yuri Olesha “Three Fat Men” , to “The Adventures of Petrushka” by M. A. Fadeeva [3] and A. I. Smirnov, “Journey Blue arrows "by J. Rodari , the collection" Russian Tales "and the collection" Clever Marcela ". [four]
The total circulation of books published with illustrations by Leonid Vladimirsky exceeds 20 million copies.
According to Vladimirsky, he “borrowed” some characters from life. So, he copied Papa Carlo from his grandfather. After which they began to stop him on the streets with the question “In which film did we see you?”, To which he answered with a smile: “I haven’t acted in films, I’ve been drawn in a book” [2] . The prototype of Ally was the daughter of the artist, at that time a school student.
