Story
The film takes place around a young engineer Petr Chumak, who after graduation is sent to work as a chief engineer at one of the Krivoy Rog mines. He falls into submission to the head of the mine department, a front-line comrade and relative, Alexei Zheleznyak, who came from a family of hereditary miners, whose father, having worked at this mine, became widely known and respected.
From the first days of work, Chumak has been the initiator of innovative methods of ore mining and proposes to change the predatory mining system, in which the best ore pieces are selected, and thousands of tons of ore remain lost. Peter meets a misunderstanding of the leadership, which pursues profit, thoughtlessly destroying the future of the mine, but finds support among the miners. The confrontation between experts is complicated by the fact that Alex is the brother of Peter's wife.
One day, a collapse occurs in a chamber prepared according to the new mining system, in which Dmitry Zheleznyak, Alexei’s father, dies. Chumak is considered guilty with his new method. Now the young engineer must make every effort and get to the bottom of the truth, because not only the honest name of Peter Chumak, but also the future of the new development system was threatened.
