According to the United States Census Bureau , the total area of the county is 1,442.631 km 2 , of which 1,419.321 km 2 is land and 23,310 km 2 or 1.590% are water bodies.

According to the 2000 census [1] , 23,478 inhabitants live in the district, consisting of 9,021 households and 6,431 families . The population density is 17.00 people per km 2 . There are 10 191 residential buildings on the territory of the district, with a building density of about 7.00 buildings per km 2 . The racial composition of the population: whites - 55.18%, African Americans - 42.55%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.35%, Asians - 0.39%, Hawaiians - 0.03%, representatives of other races - 0.78 %, representatives of two or more races - 0.72%. Hispanic people accounted for 1.39% of the population regardless of race .
34.80% of the total number of households are children under the age of 18, 47.40% of households are married couples living together, 19.30% of households are single women without a spouse, 28.70% of households households are not related to families , 25.60% of households are one person, 10.20% of households are elderly (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.57 people, and the average family size is 3.08 people.
