Carmichael, Hogi

Hoogie Carmichael ( born Howard Hoagland "Hoagy" Carmichael , November 22, 1899, Bloomington - December 27, 1981, Ranch-Mirage ) is an American songwriter, conductor and film actor. He is best known as the author of the songs “ Stardust ” (verses by M. Parish), “ Georgia on My Mind ” (verses by S. Gorrell) and “The Nearness of You” (poems by N. Washington), which have become popular jazz standards [2] .

Value

American composer and songwriter Alec Wilder wrote about Carmichael in the book American Popular Song: The Great Innovators, 1900-1950 , that he was "one of the most talented, inventive, sophisticated and jazz oriented" of all hundreds of composers who wrote popular songs in the first half of the 20th century [3] .

According to the author of the BBC, Carmichael’s songs are among the most frequently recorded American [4] .
