The P1800 was a more stylish GT car than a sports one. The popularity came to him when the car was shown in the television series The Saint , which aired in the 1960s. The P1800 was styled externally as Pietro Frua , while the technical part was taken from the Volvo Amazon 122 series. The car was sold as the Volvo P1800, 1800S, 1800E, and 1800ES.
In 1998, one of the 1800S cars recorded the highest mileage among private car owners, exceeding three million miles (more than 4.8 million kilometers) [5] .
History
After the failure of the prototype of the first sports model of Volvo P1900 in 1957, the company commissioned the design of the new version to Helmer Pettersen, the author of Volvo PV444 . The first new hand-assembled car was ready by December, but disagreements with West German Volkswagen , where production was supposed (at Karmann factories), almost led to a complete halt of the project. As a result of these competitive frictions, the production of the P1800 only began in September 1960 at the facilities of the English company Jensen . The series was a success for Volvo and was produced for 13 years until 1973.
The series was produced in 4 main modifications:
- P1800 - 1960-1963
- 1800S - 1963-1970
- 1800E - 1970-1972
- 1800ES - 1972-1973

Since the mid-1990s, the world record for the longest registered mileage for a non-profit car has been owned by the 1966 Volvo P1800S sports coupe.
By the time the record was recorded in the Guinness Book of Records in November 1998, the car covered more than 2.5 million km (1671 thousand miles). By September 2006, this sports coupe crossed the line of 4 million km, which is 100 round-the-world travels or 5 trips to the Moon and back [7] .
In September 2013, according to a press release from Volvo Cars, this car covered 3 million miles or 4.8 million km [6] .
The record car belonged to the former school teacher Irvin Gordon ( Eng. Irvin Gordon ) from Long Island , New York , its sole owner.
