Biography

Melvin Manhoef was born on May 11, 1976 in the Surinamese capital of Paramaribo . At the age of three, he moved with his family permanently to Rotterdam , where he played football as a child, and then, together with his younger brother, Moreno began to actively engage in Thai boxing . In mixed martial arts and kickboxing, he made his professional debut in 1995, although he spent relatively few fights during this period, and began to perform on an ongoing basis only in the early 2000s.

True fame came to him in 2005, when he signed a contract with the English organization Cage Rage and soon won the light heavyweight champion title, which he subsequently defended twice. Then he participated in the Hero's Japanese promotion tournaments, won the quarter-finals and semifinals of the Grand Prix, but lost the local fighter Yoshihiro Akiyama in the decisive final match.

Having won several victories, in 2008 he transferred to the newly created Japanese organization Dream , where he also participated in the grand prix, having been defeated in the semifinals by Geghard Musashi . He continued to take part in Dream tournaments in 2009 and 2010, the most significant victories during this period were early victories over New Zealander Mark Hunt and Japanese Kazuo Misaki [1] .

Along with performances in mixed martial arts, Manhuf regularly performed in kickboxing. So, twice he won in the quarter finals of K-1 , but in both cases he was forced to abandon the further struggle for the title due to injuries. His most famous victories over the Japanese are Yuji Sakuragi , the Russian Ramazan Ramazanov and the German Stefan Leko . Three times I met with the famous compatriot Remy Bonyaski , but I lost to him all three times: twice by decision and once by knockout.

In the period 2010-2013, Manhow performed in such popular promotions as Strikeforce , ONE Fighting Championship , Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki . Most of the fights were lost here, although his rivals were quite strong, for example, Robbie Lawler and Mamed Khalidov . Of the victories - the most noteworthy is a knockout victory from a knee kick over experienced Canadian Denis Kan . At the ONE FC tournament: War of the Lions arranged an uncompromising β€œchopping” with his opponent Yoshiyuki Nakamishi, as a result of which both fighters received serious cuts on their legs, and the battle was declared invalid [2] [3] [4] .

In 2013, he was noted for his performance in the Legenda promotion, and Zabit Samedov was defeated by an Azerbaijani judge by unanimous decision. In 2014, he participated in the eight Glory , but already at the quarterfinal stage, by a decision of the majority of the judges, he lost to the Belgian Philip Verlinden .

Also in 2014, Melvin Manhoef signed a contract with the prestigious American organization Bellator and immediately spent two fights in the middle weight category: in the first fight he knocked out Doug Marshall , in the second he was knocked out by Joe Schilling [5] [6] . In February 2015, he lost by knockout to Russian Alexander Shlemenko , a former Bellator champion, but subsequently Shlemenko was accused of doping, and the fight was declared invalid.

Twice he was a contender for the Bellator champion in the middle weight category, but both times lost to the current champion, Brazilian Rafael Carvalho . If the first fight ended in a rather controversial referee's decision, in the second Carvalho knocked out Manhuf with a kick in the head [7] .
