Biography
Peter Orton was born on January 28, 1916 in Plymouth, in the family of zoologist James Herbert Orton (1884-1953). In childhood, he suffered from measles , because of which he had had problems with hearing and vision all his life. He studied at a school in Northamptonshire , then enrolled at Cambridge Trinity College . In 1937 he graduated from Trinity College, then studied at the College of Music.
From 1940 to 1946, Orton served as an artilleryman in the army, in his spare time he collected a collection of beetles. Having met Arthur Pearson , Peter soon became a member of the British Mycological Society. In 1955, he received a grant from the Nuffield Foundation for the study of mycology in Kew with R.W. J. Dennis and at the University of Reading with F. B. Hora , who were preparing a summary of the UK macromycetes. The result was the New check list of British Agarics and Boleti (1960).
Since 1960, Orton taught biology, then English and music at a school in Perthshire . Many of Orton's works on Scotch mushrooms were co-written with Roy Watling . Orton’s last lifetime publication was published in 1999, describing 3 new species.
In recent years, Orton has been preparing a monograph of the subgenus of the cobweb Telamonia . In April 2005, he passed away.
