Hitzing cemetery

The Hitzing Cemetery ( German: Hietzinger Friedhof ) is one of the most famous cemeteries in the Austrian capital, the city of Vienna . Located in Hitzing , the thirteenth district of Vienna , in the central part of the district, next to the Schönbrunn Palace and Park complex, the former summer imperial residence of the Habsburgs .

History

The cemetery was consecrated in 1786. During its existence, it expanded several times, the last time in 1922. Now its area is 97,175 m². It has about 11,200 burials.

From the very beginning, the cemetery was considered the burial place of the cemetery of the rich and famous residents of the capital.

Consists of two parts. The old part is more modest, where tombstones in the Biedermeier style are built. The new part contains graves of a more complex structure, depending on the welfare of the deceased's family.

There are 111 honorary burials in the Hitzing cemetery, where prominent figures of culture, art, politics and sports of Austria rest. Among them, composers and musicians Alban Berg , Gottfried von Einem , father and son Helmesberger , poets and writers Franz Grilparzer , Alexander Lernet-Holenia , Hans Jarai , artist Gustav Klimt , sculptor Anton Hanak , directors Hubert Mariska , Karl Hartl , artists, singers and ballerinas Anton Dermot , Henrietta Trefts , Martha Harell , Fanny Elsler , architect Otto Wagner , scientist Karl Auer von Welsbach , Austrian Chancellor Engelbert Dolphus , football player Gerhard Hanappi and many others.
