Biography

Doug Marshall was born February 3, 1977 in the city of Visalia , California . He was a difficult teenager, often fought with peers on the street. When he was fourteen, his parents divorced. While studying in high school, he played for the local football team, although due to constant fights he was expelled several times and completed his studies with difficulty. Later, to support himself, he worked at a construction site, was engaged in laying floors.

He went into martial arts quite late, at the age of 26 - one day he and his father visited the World Extreme Cagefighting tournament and, looking at one of the fighters, argued that Doug could defeat him in a cage. He started going to the gym, training - already in October 2003 he made his debut at WEC, and in his third fight he got the better of the fighter about which there was a dispute. Initially, he fought among the heavyweights, but the organization’s leadership soon abandoned this weight category, and he had to go down to the light heavyweight. After four victories, he suffered two defeats in a row, from James Irwin and Tim McKinsey , but then he made a four-match unbeaten run, including winning and defending his champion title twice. He lost his champion title in March 2008, losing by knockout to compatriot Brian Stann .

After leaving WEC, in the following years, Marshall performed in middle weight in several independent promotions: Palace Fighting Championship, PureCombat, Tachi Palace Fights, Super Fight League. The most significant fights during this period were a knockout victory over Kit Berry , a knockout defeat from Kiasi Uskola, a loss to the suffocating Brazilian Zhive Santana , a knockout defeat from the Croat Croat Zelga Galesic .

Despite frequent losses, in 2012 Marshall received an invitation to take part in tournaments of the prestigious American organization Bellator , in 2013 he won the right to perform in the eighth season of the middle weight grand prix - in the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals, he successively defeated the Swede Andreas Spong , Russian Sultan Aliyev and compatriot Brett Cooper [2] . Having become the winner of the Grand Prix, I got the opportunity to challenge the title of champion, which at that time belonged to the Russian Alexander Shlemenko . Nevertheless, he did not hold out against Shlemenko even one round, was knocked out by a blow to the liver with his hand. Some time after the fight, he was convicted of using illegal substances, as a result, the Pennsylvania Athletic Commission disqualified him for several months [3] [4] .

After serving the term of disqualification, in 2014 Marshall continued to participate in the Bellator tournaments, in particular, in September he fought against the Dutchman of Surinamese origin, Melvin Manhuf , but lost to him by knockout.
