Addis Ababa Light Rail

Addis Ababa Light Rail (Amh . የአዲስ አበባ ቀላል ባቡር ) is a light rail system (LRT) in Addis Ababa , the capital of Ethiopia . Served by Ethiopian Railways . In Africa, this is the second LRT system (after Tunisia ) and the fourth partially-underground city rail system (after the Cairo , Algerian metro and Johannesburg city electric train ).

Content

History

Construction began in December 2011 . The test movement without passengers began on February 1, 2015 [1] .

Passenger traffic along the blue line (north-south) began on September 20, 2015 [2] , and along the second green line (west-east) , the movement was launched on November 9 of the same year.

The system was created by Chinese companies (construction - China Railway Group, operator - Shenzhen Metro Group).

Description

The system is mainly flyover and ground. There are 39 stations on two lines.

The system consists of 10 aboveground, 28 above ground and the only underground station located in the city center, on Menelik II Square. There are two depots, the first behind Kaliti station (for the blue line) and the second between Meri and Ayat stations (for the green line). Two lines of 41 three-section low-floor trams serve two lines. A ticket costs from 2 to 6 birr. Passenger traffic is 200,000 people per day.
