The son of mathematicians of Israel Moiseevich Gelfand and Zori Yakovlevna Shapiro .
Graduate of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University . Candidate of Biological Sciences (1975). Until 1991 - Head of the Cell Transport Laboratory at the A. N. Belozersky Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Moscow State University. [2]
Since 1991 - in the USA , since 1993 - at the University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana) , since 2004 - professor of cell and molecular biology at Northwestern University in Chicago , [3] director of the laboratory of intracellular transport [4] .
