According to the United States Census Bureau , the total area of the county is 756.281 km 2 , of which 751.101 km 2 are land and 4.921 km 2 or 0.600% are water bodies.

According to the 2000 census [1] , the district has 19,360 residents comprising 7,681 households and 5,445 families . The population density is 25.00 people per km 2 . There are 8 349 residential buildings in the district, with a building density of about 11 buildings per km 2 . Racial composition of the population: white - 90.38%, African - Americans - 6.94%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.15%, Asians - 0.14%, Hawaiians - 0.01%, representatives of other races - 1.36 %, representatives of two or more races - 1.02%. Hispanics accounted for 2.60% of the population, regardless of race .
Out of the total number of households , 32.80% are children under the age of 18, 54.70% of households are married couples living together, 12.30% of households are single women without a spouse, 29.10% of households households are not related to families , 24.80% of households consist of one person, 11.10% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.49 people and the average family size is 2.95 people.
