The period of work on the album and its release covers a difficult time for the group, when a new contract with the label was signed, there were numerous changes in the composition and bad sales of the album were going on. Family problems of the frontman of Scooter Ward's group (cancer of the sister's cancer, severing relations with the bride) also played a role in setting the overall mood of the album. The result, A Different Kind of Pain , has a melodic, less aggressive sound compared to its predecessor, Year of the Spider (2003).

About the album

Prior to working on the album, Cold were in search of a new record label. Before the group returned to Jacksonville, Ward spent some time in a rehabilitation clinic.

By September 2004, former guitarist Matt Lugran joined the band, Cold signed a new contract with Lava / Atlantic Records and were about to begin recording their next album with producer Michael “Elvis” Basket, known for working with Chevelle and Puddle of Mudd . The release of the album was scheduled for December 2004, but after the departure of Eddie Randini in November, the release date was shifted to spring 2005. Before the release of the album, Cold decided to return to the studio and record a few more songs. The original name of the album And a Sad Song Lives On was changed to The Calm that Killed the Storm and the release date was postponed to September 2005. In June 2005, it was announced on the band’s official website that the album name was again changed to A Different Kind of Pain from aim to broaden the understanding of the album’s songs The song "Happens All the Time" was released as the first single. Before shooting a video clip for this song, the group added to the guitarist Mike Booth.

The album title and most of the lyrics were written by Ward under the influence of his sister Jen's fight with cancer. [3] In fact, the group wrote most of the material in Ward's parents ’house, in Jen’s room. Ward described the songwriting process as a “healing process" and when Cold finished work on the album, Jen began a remission . The mood of the album differs from the previous works of the group, which were inherent aggressiveness. Instead, the material focuses on perseverance through love and personal trials, while the name is gloomy, which provides a feeling of greater positivity and spirituality, which the group began to develop on the previous album. This is clearly seen in the song “God's Song”. Other topics for the songs were Ward’s breakup with the bride and physical abuse of her 14-year-old daughter. For the first time, a piano ballad became the title song for the group.

The release of the album was delayed several times, in the end it was released on August 30, 2005, debuting on the 26th line of the Billboard chart - 36,000 copies of the album were sold in the United States in the first week. In total, the album sold out in a little more than 160,000, which is much less compared to the previous two works of the group.

The single "Happens All the Time" with average success participated in the Mainstream Rock and Modern Rock Tracks charts in 2005, in addition to this song was preinstalled on the premium version of the Xbox 360 systems. A video was also shot for the song. [4] The title track was released as a second single, but the label refused to sponsor the filming of the video clip.
