Aircraft

The flight was operated by Douglas C-47 Skytrain with the registration number of the USSR-L854 (factory - 12225 or 42-92426) [1] .

Crew

  • The commander of the ship - A. Vorobyov
  • Co - pilot - Egorov
  • Bortmekhanik - Gorin
  • Bortradist - Bondarenko
  • Bortradist Trainee - Gurzhiy

Holocaust

The aircraft performed a short ferry flight within Moscow from Bykovo Airport and Vnukovo Airport , where loading was already to take place. The flight took place at an altitude of 250 meters, and 15 minutes have passed since the departure, when the left engine suddenly failed. Nearby was the airfield of Sukovo , to which the crew directed the car, while trying to plow the left propeller . However, the left propeller could not be plugged, due to which it created increased aerodynamic drag, and being distracted by it, they forgot to remove the mixture formation lever in the serviceable right engine from the "Automatic depletion" position. Then, when the liner began to land in Sukova, flight engineer Gorin suddenly saw that the red lamp of the landing gear was not lit on the panel, so he screamed in panic: The chassis did not reach the second round! Not having time to realize the situation, Commander Vorobyov immediately from a height of only 1 meter and on one serviceable engine began to leave. Since there was only one operational engine (right) out of two on board, the load on it increased. Given that the depletion mode was not turned on, the right engine quickly overheated, and then failed. Having lost control, the car fell into a tailspin and crashed into a forest. The co-pilot and the radar operator were seriously injured, but survived. The three remaining crew members died [1] .

Reasons

According to the conclusion of the commission, the failure of the left engine occurred due to the destruction of the crankshaft . Further uncoordinated actions of the crew led to the fact that when leaving for the second round, the right engine also failed. As for the burning landing gear alarm lamp, it turned out to be false and was also caused by an error in the crew’s actions - the navigator forgot to put the chassis mechanical lock handle in the “locked” position and put the landing gear crane handle in neutral. In general, in this composition, the crew flew for the first time, and for Commander Vorobyov it was only the third independent flight [1] .
