The action of the series takes place in the year 2267, several years after the events described in the series “ Babylon 5 ” and immediately after the events shown in the film “ Babylon 5: Call to Arms ”. The race, called the “ Drakh, ” attacks the Earth , trying to destroy it with the “Cloud of Death”, but the attack failed and the only former destroyer of the planets, the “Cloud of Death”, and the shock fleet were destroyed by the combined fleet of the Interstellar Alliance. All that a drakh manages is to inject nanovirus into the Earth's atmosphere (like the so-called “gray mucus” ) also inherited from the Shadows. Scientists of the Earth and other races of the Interstellar Alliance managed to find out that the nanovirus is underdeveloped due to the short modification time for the biology of earthlings, and its full adaptation to the human body takes about five years. By the end of this period, the new Earth ship " Excalibur ", built shortly before the attack, must find an antidote to the "plague of the Drakh," as the nanovirus, which threatens the metropolis of human civilization, was termed earthlings.
Scenario and filming
Like Babylon 5, as conceived by Joseph Michael Strazinski , the Crusade was supposed to have a storyline in itself containing a story of five years, despite Strazinski’s comments on the DVD “To Arms!” That the Drakh plague will be defeated after one or two seasons of the series and the storyline will shift to solve another problem. One way or another, the conflict between producers and executive directors from TNT grew, and the filming was stopped before the first season came out. [1]
Drakh's attack
In 2267, seven years after the War of the Shadows, the Drakh, the former assistants of the Shadows, are trying to destroy the Earth with the help of their Shattered Planet Shadows. Interstellar Alliance President John Sheridan commands the crews of Excalibur , Victory and the entire fleet of the Interstellar Alliance to counterattack Drakh. Defeated in the battle near the Earth (Destroyer of the Planets of Shadows and a significant part of the Drakh battle fleet were killed), the Drakh still managed to throw into the Earth’s atmosphere a special nanovirus - a weapon that they also inherited from their former owners - the Shadows (injection of the Shadow nanovirus into the Earth’s atmosphere - drakhs applied reserve plan in case of a crash on the Earth). But if you do not find an antidote for the remaining five years, then the entire population of the Earth will die. The ship "Victory" heroically died during the battle, ramming the control center of the Destroyer of the Planets of Shadows (the crash caused by the ship "Victory" ramming the control center of the Destroyer of the Planets of the Shadows caused a catastrophic failure on it - the Destroyer of the Planets of the Shadows prematurely slammed and released planetary torpedoes and destroyed it by myself). But Excalibur has survived, and now the team, led by Matthew Gideon , faces the most difficult task - to find an antidote, or an ally of the Earth Alliance who would be able to create such an antidote.
Telepathic War
This war contrasts normal people and loyal telepaths and the Psi Corps . The Psi Corps is trying to take over the Earth Alliance government. The Psi Corps also manages many concentration camps to “re-educate” the fugitives that the Psi Corps manages to capture, and it kills civilians harboring fugitive telepaths. John Sheridan and the Interstellar Alliance intervene. Normal people and loyal telepaths win this war, although there are many victims (including Lita Alexander and Lennier ).
Characters
- Captain Matthew Gideon ( Gary Cole ) - Captain Excalibur. He was personally chosen by the President of the Interstellar Alliance, John Sheridan , knowing that Gideon is prone to healthy adventurousness and Gideon does not allow diplomacy to stand in the way of fulfilling the task.
- Lieutenant John Matheson ( Daniel Day Kim ) - assistant captain, telepath . Considered a hero for many telepaths, as he managed to advance farther than other telepaths in the Earth Forces . Gideon demanded that Mateson become his first officer, “otherwise look for another captain,” as Gideon himself declared.
- Max Islerson ( David Allen Brooks ) is an eminent archaeologist and linguist working on Interplanetary Expeditions. Born as a child prodigy and has the innate ability to understand alien languages. He was accepted to the mission in the series "Military Zone".
- Galen ( Peter Woodward ) is a techno - mag who saved Gideon's life 10 years before the events of the series. He was expelled from his order in 2267 after he helped the Earth and the Interstellar Alliance defeat the Drakh (“ To Arms ”). Has a specific sense of humor.
- Dr. Sarah Chambers ( Margin Holden ) - Excalibur Medical Officer. Was on Mars during the Drakh attack on Earth. I decided to join the crew, instead of returning to Earth to my family.
- Darina Nafil ( Carrie Dobro ) is a highly professional thief and the last member of her race (the drakh destroyed her planet during the trials of the Planet Destroyer found on the ancient Ka-Dam base of Shadows shortly before the attack on Earth), but later it turns out that a small number representatives of her race still survived, but also infected with a virus). Together with Galen, she helped Sheridan prevent the Drakh from destroying the Earth. After that, she spent some time in jail on Mars, but Gideon demanded that she be included in the crew.
- Captain Elizabeth Lockley ( Tracy Scoggins ) - commandant of Babylon 5. She first met Gideon on Mars during the Drakhov Plague Conference. Although at first both captains did not get along, their relationship soon changed to close ones.

The order of the filmed episodes, the most consistent with the original chronological plan of the series, according to Strazhinsky : [2]
- (-) Fighting zone (retake)
- 1. Racing in the night
- 2. Earth's needs
- 3. Memory of war
- 4. Long road
- 5. Guests from our street
- 6. The Well of Eternity
- 7. Every night I dream of a house
- 8. Labyrinths of the soul
- 9. Path of sorrows
- 10. Rule from the grave
- 11. Rules of the game
- 12. Battle zone
- 13. Propriety and other deceptions.
However, there are doubts about the seriousness of this list, since then, for example, the chronology of the relationship between Matthew Gideon and Elizabeth Lockley is violated. At the end of the "Appearances and Other Deceits" series, the Excalibur crew has a new form of clothing, but only according to the usual order of the series (according to the chronology of the screen output) they continue to walk in it until the end; according to the list, allegedly, Strazhinsky, the chronology of events is completely violated.

Conflict with TNT
Crusade Wars (short video)
The difficulties that the series authors had in the dialogue with the TNT channel and which ended with the cessation of filming and the production of new episodes are reflected in one of the parodies invented by the creators of Babylon Park - J. Michael Strazhinsky’s conflict with one cable television network is shown in this story. The protagonists are: Captain Gideot - by combining Gideon ( Matthew Gideon , the captain of Excalibur and ( eng. Idiot is an idiot ), that is, literally, the captain is an idiot, Captain Brockley and others. They have to save Strazhinsky from the captivity of the Dark Side of Marketing where the latter plays the role of a powerful intergalactic evil empire (in its desire to get a rating in any way, including in the plots below the belt).
