Coat of Arms History
The Constitution, adopted by the 1st Congress of Councils of Armenia on February 2, 1922, approved the description of the coat of arms of Armenia. The emblem was an image of the ranges of the Greater and Lesser Masis ( Ararat ), above which in the rays of the rising sun were a sickle and a hammer, at the foot - a bush of grapes with vine and leaves, ears of wheat, olive branches. Around the coat of arms in the margins were inscriptions in Armenian “Socialist Soviet Republic of Armenia” and “ Workers of all countries, unite!” »The coat of arms was completed by Martiros Saryan and Hakob Kojoyan .
There is a diplomatic apocrypha , according to which Turkey seemed to protest - why did Armenia put a mountain on its coat of arms that does not belong to it? To which the then People’s Commissar of Foreign Affairs Chicherin replied: “Why is there a crescent on the flag of Turkey? The moon doesn’t belong to her either ” [1] .
The name of the republic in Armenian on the emblem of 1922 was read as “hAyastani Socialistakan Khorrdayin hAnrapetutyun” (Socialist Soviet Republic of Armenia). On April 3, 1927, the Fifth Congress of Soviets of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Armenia adopted a new version of the Constitution, according to which the name was changed to “Armenian SSR” and an abbreviation of this name in Armenian was included in the coat of arms of the Armenian SSR instead of the previously existing full name.
After the abolition of the Transcaucasian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic ( ZSFSR ) and the entry of the Armenian SSR directly into the USSR on March 23, 1937, the Extraordinary IX Congress of Soviets of the Armenian SSR adopted a new Constitution. The emblem was slightly changed: the olive wreath was replaced by bread ears, the disk of the rising sun and its rays were removed from the drawing, the sickle and hammer began to be illuminated with a five-pointed star, the inscription “Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic” (in Armenian) and the emblem below were located on the emblem: “ Workers of all countries, unite! ”(In Armenian and Russian).
From 1937 to 1940, the inscription on the coat of arms was read in Armenian as “Haykakan Khorrdayin Socialistakan Hanrapetutyun” (Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic). In 1940, the Armenian terms “Soviet” and “republic” were changed. A new version of the name of the republic in Armenian: “Haykakan Sovetakan Socialist Republic”. From 1966, the word “Republic” was again translated in the old way and until the end of the existence of the Armenian SSR, and for the first time the Republic of Armenia had the inscription “HaykakAn Sovetakan Socialistakan hAnrapetutyun” on the coat of arms.
Article 120 of the Constitution of the Armenian SSR described the emblem of the republic as follows:
The state emblem of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic consists of an image of the Greater and Lesser Ararat, a sickle and a hammer on top of a five-pointed star surrounded by rays. At the foot of the mountains there is a vineyard bush with vine and leaves, ears of wheat on the right and left. Around the coat of arms in the margins there is an inscription in Armenian “Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic”. Below on a red background there is an inscription on a red background in Armenian and Russian languages "Workers of all countries, unite!"
