In 1967 he graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Warsaw with a thesis on Dante Alighieri. Then he studied in Milan, Leuven, Florence, Pisa, Naples, Bonn and Heidelberg.
He was a professor of History of Eastern Europe at the University of Pisa ( 1976 - 1987 ), Heidelberg ( 1985 - 1986 ), Trento ( 1987 - 2009 ) and Venice ( 1990 - 1991 ). He participated in anthropological expeditions to Africa and the Amazon.
He performed research on the history of Poland in the 16th century, the history of the Church and Polish-Italian relations. In 1987 received Italian citizenship. In 2002, he was awarded honoris causa by the Polish University Abroad in London.
Member of Société Historique et Littéraire Polonaise de Paris and Polskie Towarzystwo Naukowe na Obczyźnie (Polish Society of Arts and Sciences Abroad) in London. His extensive collection includes engravings on the theme of Poland, parchments (dating from the 10th to the 16th centuries) and geographical maps of Poland.
Since September 1955 he has been keeping a diary from which several parts have been published.
Since 2008 , retired. In the same year he began to write short stories, historical essays and articles on exhibitions published in major Polish literary magazines.
He wrote memories of his school years from 1954 to 1958 .
A collection of his stories, along with autobiographical texts, was published in 2012 .
