Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau , the county’s total area is 2,934,473 km 2 , of which 2,735.043 km 2 are land and 199.430 km 2 or 6.780% are water bodies.
Population
According to the 2000 census [1] , 38,264 residents of 14,470 households and 10,490 families live in the okrug. The population density is 14.00 people per km 2 . On the territory of the okrug there are 18 129 residential buildings, with a building density of about 7.00 buildings per km 2 . Racial composition of the population: white - 55.52%, African - Americans - 42.18%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.63%, Asians - 0.25%, Hawaiians - 0.04%, representatives of other races - 0.56 %, representatives of two or more races - 0.82%. Hispanics made up 1.44% of the population, regardless of race .
Of the total number of households , 33.10% are children under the age of 18 years, 51.10% of households are married couples living together, 16.80% of households are single women without a spouse, 27.50% of households households are not related to families , 24.00% of households consist of one person, 10.10% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.62 people and the average family size is 3.11 people.
The age structure of the district: 27.50% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 26.90% from 25 to 44, 24.70% from 45 to 64, and 24.70% from 65 and older. The average age of a resident of the district is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 91.90 males . For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.90 males .
The average household income in the district was 29 733 USD , for a family - 34 169 USD . The average male earnings were $ 28,518 versus $ 19,228 for a woman . The per capita income was 14,831 USD . About 17.30% of families and 21.10% of the total population were below the poverty line , including 28.70% of youth (those who were not yet 18 years old) and 19.10% of those who were already over 65 years old .
