Lauritz Lebrecht Hommel Melchior ( Dat. Lauritz Lebrecht Hommel Melchior ; March 20, 1890 , Copenhagen , Denmark - March 18, 1973 , Santa Monica , USA ) - Danish opera singer ( tenor ). One of the most famous Wagnerian heroic tenors of the 20th century.

Biography

Born in the family of the school principal. In childhood, he sang in a church choir. He studied at the Royal Opera School in Copenhagen. In 1913 he made his debut as a baritone , playing the part of Silvio in Ruggero Leoncavallo 's opera Pagliacci ; after continuing his studies for four years, he moved to tenor. In 1918 , Cupronickel played his first big Wagnerian role - the title role in “Tannhäuser” . Until 1921 , he remained a member of the troupe of the Royal Opera of Copenhagen, often performed there afterwards. In 1921-23 he studied in London, Berlin and Munich (with Anna Bar-Mildenburg ). In 1926 he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera .

The singer regularly performed in London ( Covent Garden ) (1924-39) and at the Bayreuth Festival (1924-31), with whose leader Siegfried Wagner he had sincere friendship. In 1925, he first performed at the Vienna Opera. In 1925-1939 he was a regular guest at the Berlin State Opera. In 1926-1950 he sang in triumph at the Metropolitan Opera. In addition, Cupronickel performed in Paris, Brussels, Chicago, San Francisco, Buenos Aires and other cities. Often his partner was Kirsten Flagstad . Left the scene in 1950 . Starred in Hollywood; up to a very respectable age he gave concerts and took notes.

Creativity

The repertoire of Lauritz Cupronickel included Wagnerian heroic tenor parts, in addition, the parts of Othello in the opera of the same name , Radames in Aida by Giuseppe Verdi and Florestan in Fidelio by Beethoven . His strong voice with baritone coloring and brilliant top notes and dramatic performance contributed to the glory of the ideal heroic tenor.
