Biography

Guram Gugenishvili was born on July 23, 1986 in Tbilisi , Georgian SSR . At the age of seventeen, he began to actively engage in freestyle wrestling , underwent training under the guidance of coach Gia Galdava, who is currently the deputy chairman of the Department of Sports for Youth of the Government of Georgia, and later became a student of the famous Georgian wrestler Luke Kurtanidze , two-time Olympic medalist, multiple champion Europe and the world. Within three years he managed to win the national championship and fulfilled the standard of a master of sports, nevertheless, due to serious injuries he was forced to interrupt his wrestling career.

In connection with the break, I tried myself in other martial arts, achieved the world champion title in universal combat , and became one of the winners at the world championship in combat sambo . Starting in 2007, he began to fight in mixed rules .

He achieved his first serious success in MMA in 2009, when he took part in several tournaments of the M-1 Global organization in Ukraine and won confident victories in all. Then he won the qualifying tournaments in Eastern and Western Europe, the M-1 Selection, as a result of which in October 2010 he was awarded the right to compete for the first time being played the title of M-1 Challenge champion in the heavy weight category. Another contender was American Kenny Garner , winner of the same qualifying tournament in the United States, base drummer. The first round of their confrontation turned out to be equal, Garner hit, Gugenishvili made passes to his legs, while in the second Georgian fighter managed to strangle the guillotine , as a result of which the American lost consciousness. Thus, Guram Gugenishvili became the first heavyweight champion in the history of M-1.

In March 2011, Gugenishvili defended his championship belt, taking the upper hand over the Russian Maxim Grishin , near the end of the first round he successfully strangled from behind. The second defense could not be held due to injury, while Garner was declared the interim champion, having gained the upper hand over Grishin. Having recovered from his injury, in June 2012, a Georgian fighter met with Garner in the fight for the undisputed champion of the organization and this time lost him by technical knockout - in the third round he received a serious cut and a hematoma on his face, so the doctor present at the match forbade him to enter the ring . At the end of the same year, the third match took place between them, Gugenishvili tried to regain his championship title, but lost again - fell under a hail of punches, and the referee stopped the fight, counting a technical knockout [1] .

After a long recovery period in 2014, Gugenishvili successfully performed in the Japanese IGF promotion, where he defeated Australian veteran Tony Bonello . He planned to continue performing in M-1, but on November 9 died in a car accident in the Gori municipality during a hunting trip [2] [3] .

He had higher education, in 2007 he graduated from the Faculty of Economics and Law of Tbilisi State University [4] .

In February 2015, a memorial tournament M-1 Challenge in memory of Guram Gugenishvili was held in Tbilisi [5] .
