Joseph Andorfer Ewan ( 1909 - 1999 ) is an American botanist, bibliographer and historian of botany.

Biography
Joseph Ewan was born on October 24, 1909 in Philadelphia . Mother, Emma Magill Ewan, died in 1911, the boy was raised in a paternal aunt family of Sarah Serann and her husband John Lewis Endorfer, who lived in New Jersey . In 1912, the family moved to Los Angeles . In 1928, Joseph entered the University of California at Los Angeles , and in 1933 moved to the University of Berkeley . In 1934 he graduated with a bachelor's degree.
From 1933-1937, Ewan was an assistant to Professor Willis Lynn Jepson in the preparation of A flora of California . In August 1935, Joseph married Ada Nesta Dunn, whom he met at the university.
Since 1937, Ewan worked as a biology instructor at the University of Colorado at Boulder , taught courses at the University of Colorado at Denver , and traveled through the mountains in his spare time.
During World War II, Ewan was sent to Colombia to search for the source of quinine, the quinine tree bark . In 1945, he also visited Venezuela and Trinidad .
After a short job at the Smithsonian Institution (1945–1946) and the Phyto Industry Bureau in Maryland (1946–1947) in 1947, Joseph Ewan became an assistant botanist at Tulane University in New Orleans . In 1952 he became an assistant professor, in 1957 - a professor of botany. In 1977 he accepted the title of Honorary Professor.
In the years 1954-1955, Ewan, according to the Guggenheim scholarship, was in the British Museum in London. Joseph Endorfer Ewan reprinted many works of the XVIII-XIX centuries on travels in North America. He wrote the preface to the facsimile of the books of William Darlington , Humphrey Marshall , Constantine Samuel Rafinesk , John Torrey , William Bartram , Luigi Castiglioni .
In 1967, Ewan became a temporary instructor at the University of Hawaii, and in 1974, a professor. In 1978 and 1981, he was an interim professor at the University of Oregon, and in 1982 at Ohio State University. In 1984, Ewan worked for some time at the Smithsonian Institution.
In 1980, Ewan became an Honorary Doctor of Tulane University. Since 1976, he has been a member of the Linnaeus Society of London . In 1978, he was awarded the Eluise Payne Lucer Medal of the Gardening Club of America, in 1986 - the medal of the founder of the Society for the History of Natural History, and in 1994 - the medal of Henry Shaw of the Missouri Botanical Garden .
In 1997, Joseph Ewan survived a stroke. December 5, 1999 he died in the city of Mandeville in Louisiana.
