The son of France’s constable, Mathieu I de Montmorency and Alice Fitz Roy, the legitimate illegitimate daughter of Henry I of England .

Appeared at the French court in the early 1150s and soon became one of Louis VII 's close associates, for whom he carried out various important assignments. As a grandson of the English king, marrying a woman whose family dates back to Charlemagne , and having become a relative of Philip II Augustus through this marriage, Bouchard was considered one of the most powerful barons of the kingdom and became so proud that he became known as "God's Grace Senor de Montmorency."

In 1189 he accepted the cross, but died before the royal army set off on the Third Crusade .
