Biography
Gabriel Bernal was born March 24, 1956 in the state of Guerrero . He made his debut in the professional ring in 1974, after which he spent a lot of fights over ten years - he most often won, but sometimes suffered a defeat. In particular, during this period he disputed the Mexican champion title and later the champion title of the North American Boxing Association flyweight, but lost both fights.
Despite a series of unpleasant defeats, by April 1984 he was one of the top ten boxers in his weight division and was awarded the right to compete for the world title according to the versions of the World Boxing Council and the Ring magazine. He went to Japan and in the second round knocked out reigning champion Koji Kobayashi . Two months later, in France, Bernal defended the championship belt - his opponent, the Frenchman Antoine Montero , broke his jaw in the eleventh round, as a result of which the referee was forced to stop the match and count the technical knockout.
This title defense turned out to be the first in a long time, as the previous six champions lost their belt in the very first battles. For all that, after four months in Thailand, Bernal nevertheless lost the championship belt to the local fighter Sotu Chitalada , by a close separate decision of the judges. The following year, a rematch took place between them, he knocked down Chitalad in the first and eighth rounds, but at the end of the twelve rounds, the judges declared a draw, and thus the Thai remained with the belt. In 1986, Bernal came to Bangkok for the third time to meet with Chitalada, but for the third time he could not get the better of him, he lost by unanimous decision.
Subsequently, Gabriel Bernal continued to enter the ring for several years, alternately boxing in the second easiest weight category, was twice a contender for the title of champion of Mexico, however, he lost both fights and did not achieve any significant achievements. He ended his sports career in 1992 - in his last duel on points he lost to the former world champion in bantamweight according to the WBC Miguel Lore . In total, he spent 60 fights in professional boxing: 43 of them won (including 28 ahead of schedule), lost 14 times, in three cases a draw was recorded.
He died on June 12, 2014 in a hospital in Mexico City [1] .
