Biography
Hegg was born in 1918 in , a commune of , Sweden .
Hegg was skiing until he was 13 years old. Immediately after graduating from elementary school, he began working on a farm. He started running at the age of 17. The breakthrough occurred at the competition in Ostersund , where he won 1,500 meters in fierce competition.
On August 10, 1941, he set his first world record (out of 15) at , winning 1,500 meters with a score of 3.47.6, one second faster than his regular rival Arne Andersson .
Between July 1 and September 20, 1942 - often called the “80 Days of Gunder Hegg” - he broke ten world records. This result in 1965 exceeded Ron Clark , setting 11 world records. In the spring of 1946, a few months before the European Championships , Hunder Hegg and his colleague were disqualified “forever” for violating amateur rules, as they repeatedly fled for money. The decision, which entered into force on March 17, 1946, caused great debate in Sweden and many considered it unfair. The term was ridiculed and was later changed to "lifelong."
Hegg was at the peak of his career during the Second World War , so he never had a chance to participate in major competitions. He won, however, in 1943 the very prestigious title in the United States . Gunder Hegg and Ingemar Johansson (1959) are the only Swedish male athletes to win the title, and only Swedish golfer Annika Sörenstam won the title (2003, 2004 and 2005). It should be noted that very few non-Americans have won this title.
