Player Career
The early years
In 1998, Ward graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University in Scarborough , Ontario .
He began his hockey career by playing in the Ontario Hockey League ( OHL ) for the Owen Sound Platers . Joel spent four seasons on the team, after which in 2001, before the end of the season, he moved to Long Beach Ice Dogs , playing in the West Coast Hockey League ( WCHL ).
Before the start of the 2001-02 season, Ward was screened at the Detroit Red Wings training camp, but was subsequently recruited by Prince Edward Island University to play for the local Panthers hockey team at Canadian Interuniversity Sports ( CIS ). At the end of the season, the hockey player was awarded the Best Rookie of the Year Prize and later became the team’s most valuable player three times, while simultaneously receiving a degree in sociology at the university.
Club career
Upon completion of training in 2006, Ward was invited to the Minnesota Wild training camp, after which he signed his first professional contract and began playing for the Houston Aeros farm club in the American Hockey League ( AHL ).
On September 27, 2006, the forward signed a two-year contract with Wild . [2] During the 2006-07 season, Joel went on the ice as part of the Minnesota Wild 11 times, playing mainly for the farm club, developing and gaining more points with each season.
The 2007–08 season was completely spent at Houston Aeros , having played 79 matches and scored 41 (21 + 20) points.
On July 15, 2008, a Canadian, as a free agent, signed a one-year contract with the NHL club Nashville Predators in the amount of $ 500,000 [3] .
On October 10, 2008, he first played for the Predators and scored his first NHL goal against St. Louis Blues . [four]
As a result of his first NHL full season 2008/09, Ward scored 35 points (17 + 18) in 79 games. His successful offensive game and at the same time a reliable defense game brought him a new two-year contract with the Nashville Predators for $ 3 million [5] [6] .
On July 1, 2011, Joel, as a free agent, signed a four-year $ 12 million contract with Washington Capitals [7] .
On April 25, 2012, Ward scored a winning goal in overtime in the seventh Stanley Cup first round playoff game against the Boston Bruins . After the season, the hockey player had an operation to remove a sports hernia.
On November 1, 2013, the striker made his first hat-trick of his career in a meeting against the Philadelphia Flyers . For the 2013/14 season, Joel scored 49 (24 + 25) points in 82 games for the Washington Capitals .
The contract of the Canadian with the “Capital” expired in the summer of 2015, after which he became an unlimited free agent. Striving for stability, Ward wanted to sign a new contract with the Capitals for four years, but the club offered the player an agreement for no more than two seasons. Joel became one of the most sought-after market players: he was interested in many clubs, including Edmonton Oilers , Chicago Blackhawks , Vancouver Canucks and others. Last season 2014/15, Joel scored 34 (19 + 15) points in 82 games of the regular season and added 9 (3 + 6) points in 14 playoff games. Speaking in the capital's club, he managed to play at all levels, including with Ovechkin and Backstrom , without being in any combination superfluous. Its distinguishing feature was its fighting character: no matter how the game evolved for the Capitals, Ward always fought to the last. It is impossible not to note the level of his performances in the playoffs: the pressure of cup matches only started him up and made him even more aggressive and useful.
In July 2015, the hockey player signed a 3-year contract with San Jose Sharks in the amount of $ 9.825 million [8] . In October, Ward was named the second star of the month: on his account a hat-trick in a match with Carolina Hurricanes (5: 2). As part of the “San Jose” in the first season reached the Stanley Cup final , lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Ward scored 7 goals in the playoffs , including a victory in the Western Conference final series against St. Louis Blues .
In the next two seasons, his performance steadily decreased, as a result, he remained in reserve in all the matches of the playoffs of 2018 . At the end of the season he became an unlimited free agent.
International Career
He participated in the 2014 World Cup [9] as part of the Canadian national team and with six goals became one of the team’s top scorers [10] . Team Canada finished in 5th place.
Personal life
Ward was born into a family of immigrants from Barbados . His mother, Cecilia, worked as a nurse, and his father, Randall, was a car mechanic. Joel has two brothers - Shane and Julian [11] .
Ward takes part in the Hockey for Everyone project and plans to teach in elementary school after completing a gaming career .
