Biography
Early years
Derek Jeter's parents met in Germany , where they served in the US Army . Derek’s father is African American, his mother is of Irish-German descent [2] . Jiter was born in the town of Peckwannock Township in New Jersey , and in four years moved with his family to Kalamazoo in Michigan . While studying at high school, Kalamazoo Derek played for school baseball and basketball teams. He especially succeeded in the first, having proved himself an outstanding slugger. In 1992, USA Today , Gatorade, and the Association of Baseball Coaches recognized Jeter the best baseball player of the year among high school students in the United States. Since 2011, the school baseball stadium is named after Derek Jeter [3] . The University of Michigan wanted to see Jeter on its baseball team and offered him a sports scholarship, but Derek chose to become a professional athlete immediately after graduation [4] .
At the 1992 Major League Baseball Draft, Jeter was seen as one of the first-choice candidates. The Houston Astros club, which was the first to choose, however, preferred to abandon Jeter, fearing that he would ask for a too high bonus when signing the contract [4] . As a result, Derek was chosen under the sixth number by the New York Yankees club, which paid him $ 800 thousand at the conclusion of the contract [5] . For four years, Jeter played in lower baseball leagues, starting his professional career very unsuccessfully. In the debut game as a professional, Derek hit the bat seven times and did not hit a single hit. For 47 games of the season in the Rookie League, Jeter beat off only 20.2% of innings, in the last game the coach didn’t even let him out on the field so that Derek would not drop below 20%, the so-called Mendoza threshold characterizing inept sluggers [6] . The first failures did not break Jeter. In subsequent seasons, he significantly improved his game as a slugger, and also worked hard on the game as a field player. In 1994, Derek, having played the season for three teams in three leagues, beat off 34.4% of innings, had five home runs , 68 RBIs and 50 stolen bases. He was awarded the title of Best Low League Leader in Baseball America, Sporting News, USA Today and Topps. [7]
In Major League Baseball
In 1995, Jeter, due to an injury to the main short-stop “New York Yankees” Tony Fernandez got a chance to prove himself. On May 29, 1995, Derek Jeter made his debut match in Major League Baseball. In the game against the Seattle Mariners , he was the ninth batter and hit the bat five times, but did not make a single hit and was knocked out by a strike-out once [8] . Before Fernandez returned to duty, Jeter managed to take part in 13 games in which he beat off 25% of innings and made two mistakes, after which he was sent back to the minor league. However, Fernandez didn’t have a good season, so the new manager Joe Torrey was counting on Jeter as the main short stop next season [9] , but the team owner George Steinbrenner was skeptical about the prospects of the young player, and intended to make an exchange in order to get more an experienced baseball player on a short stop problem position. However, after persuading the functionaries of the team, Steinbrenner agreed to give Jeter a chance [10] .
Jeter fully trusted him. Already in the opening match of the new season, Derek knocked out his first home run in Major League Baseball. And the entire first full season in the “Yankees” for Jeter turned out to be extremely successful. He finished it with 31.4% of rebounded innings, knocked out 10 home runs, completed 104 runs and earned 78 RBI. He was unconditionally recognized as the best rookie of the year in the American League [11] . In the playoffs of the same year, Jeter became the leading striker of the Yankees, raising his percentage of rebound innings to 36.1. Having won the Atlanta Braves club in the World Series , the New York Yankees for the first time since 1978 became champions of Major League Baseball.
In subsequent seasons, Jeter established himself as one of the main stars of Major League Baseball and the leading player of the New York Yankees. He was regularly invited to matches of all the stars of Major League Baseball, in 1998 he took third place in the vote by definition of the most valuable player in the American League [12] . In 1998-2000, the Yankees won three World Series titles with Jitter in a row. In the 2000 season, Derek became the first player in Major League Baseball history to win awards in one year for the most valuable player in the World Series and the most valuable player in the match of all Major League Baseball stars [13] . Before the start of the 2001 season, Jeter signed a ten-year contract with the Yankees, under which his salary amounted to $ 189 million. At that time, it was the second largest salary contract in professional sports after the contract of Alex Rodriguez in the amount of $ 252 million [14] .
In June 2003, Jeter was appointed new captain of the New York Yankees. This post remained vacant for eight years after Dan Mattingly left the sport [15] . Before the start of the 2004 season, Alex Rodriguez, an outstanding player, holder of two Golden Gloves and also playing short stops, joined the New York team. However, Jeter retained his position on the field, Rodriguez became a third-base player, significantly strengthened this position and allowed Derek to act more efficiently to the left [16] . Thanks to working with Rodriguez, Jeter significantly improved his defensive game and for three consecutive years he was awarded the Golden Glove as the best shortstop of the American League, and by the end of his career he already had five such awards.
2009 was a particularly successful year for Jeter. On September 11, he broke Lou Gehrig 's record for the number of hits knocked out by a New York Yankees player, bringing his score to 2722 [17] . He again, for the fifth time in his career, became the champion of the Major League Baseball, and in the World Series he beat the pitch with a high percentage of 40.7. Sports Illustrated magazine named Jeter the best athlete of the year [18] , and along with Sporting News website included him in the symbolic national team of Major League Baseball of the past decade. According to Sporting News, Jeter took eighth place in the ranking of the best acting baseball players [19] .
Before the start of the 2011 season, Jeter, who became a free agent , signed a new contract with Yankees. This time the agreement in the amount of 51 million dollars was designed for three years with the possibility of extension for the fourth [20] . In the game Derek by this time there has been a decline, his age made itself felt. His performance as a batter deteriorated; in defense, he also became less effective. However, this did not stop Jitter on July 9, 2011, becoming the first of the Yankees to enter the club's 3,000 hits. In addition, he set a club record for the number of matches played. In 2012, Jeter once again extremely successfully played in the attack. With 216 hits, he became the best of the season in terms of this indicator [21] , and also entered the top ten in terms of beaten-up hits of Major League Baseball players in its entire history [22] .
Jeter missed most of the 2013 season due to injuries and, for 17 games played, had a record low percentage of rebound innings - 19 [23] . Before the start of the 2014 season, Jeter signed a contract with the Yankees for another season, warning in advance that he would be the last of his career [24] . In his farewell season, forty-year-old Derek made it to sixth place on the Major League Baseball leaderboard in hits [25] , and also entered the top ten in jogging [26] . Jeter ended his career with 3,465 hits, 260 home runs, 1,311 RBIs, and a 31 percent rebound.
World Baseball Classics
Derek Jeter was the main shortstop of the American baseball team in the 2006 World Baseball Classic. In six games, he beat off 9 of 20 innings (45%) and made five runs. Of the players who entered the bat at least 20 times in the tournament, only American Ken Griffey Jr. (52.4%) and Cuban Joandi Garlobo (48%) had better performance. With his game, Jeter was honored with inclusion in the symbolic team of the tournament [27] .
In the 2009 World Baseball Classic, Jeter would again be the main short stop, and was also appointed captain of the American team [28] . In eight games, he beat off 8 of 29 innings (27.6%) [29] .
