Biography
He graduated from Abakan secondary school No. 12 in 1991 . Received a specialty electrician in vocational school № 32 of the city of Abakan .
In 1996, he decided to fight the spread of drugs, came to the newspaper, and wrote a note at the request of the editor. Gradually became an investigative journalist. He published materials on drug trafficking, illegal gold mining, and VIP poaching in various newspapers and websites. On December 10, 2004 , according to the results of the competition, the jury of the A. D. Sakharov Prize “For Journalism as an Act” recognized the journalist from Khakassia as the winner.
May 9, 2005 founded his own online magazine "New Focus". The materials on the accident at the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric power station on August 17, 2009 received a wide response [1] . In 2009, his activity was marked by the Diploma of the A. Sakharov Prize “For Journalism as an Act”. In 2010 he was awarded the Diploma of the Union of Journalists of Russia “For Professional Excellence”. According to the secretary of the Russian Federation of Journalists, Mikhail Afanasyev is a unique journalist in the world in the number of acquittals in connection with his professional activities [2] .
In 2013, the Swedish Club for the Protection of the Rights of Journalists (the oldest association in Europe, operating since 1874 ) elected Mikhail Afanasyev, foreign journalist from Russia , as the winner of the prize [3] .
He lives in Abakan, in Khakassia.
