Biography
Lady Elizabeth was the daughter of Frederick Hervey, 4th Earl of Bristol, and was known in the family circle under the nickname Bess. She was born in a small mansion in Horringer, St Edmundsbury, County Suffolk, England. In 1776 she married the Irishman John Thomas Foster (1747-1796). When her father became Earl of Bristol in 1779, she became Lady Elizabeth Foster. Three children were born in the marriage; two sons, Frederick (October 3, 1777-1853) and Augustus John Foster (December 1780-1848), as well as a daughter, Elizabeth, who was born prematurely on November 17, 1778 and lived only 8 days. The couple lived after 1779 with their parents in Icworth in Suffolk County. The marriage was not successful, and five years later the couple divorced, presumably after Foster began an affair with the maid. Foster retained custody of his sons and for 14 years did not allow the boys to see Bess.
In May 1782, Bess met the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire in Bath , after which she quickly became a close friend of Georgiana. Since that time, she lived with Georgiana and her husband William, 5th Duke of Devonshire, for about 25 years. From the duke she gave birth to two children: a daughter, Carolina St. Jules, and a son, Augustus (later Augustus Clifford, 1st Baronet), who were raised in Devonshire House along with the legitimate children of the duke from Georgiana. With the blessing of Georgiana, Lady Elizabeth married the Duke in 1809, three years after the death of Georgiana, continuing to live in his house all this time.
According to some reports, she had novels with many more men. She died in 1824 during a trip to Rome.
