Group History
Title
Guitarist Max Cazacci played in the reggae band Africa Unite , keyboardist Busta and vocalist Samuel played together in the band Amici di Roland . Ninja drummer played concerts with Ornella Vanoni . Pierfunk has collaborated with many Italian artists such as Loredana Berthe and Marcella Bella. The name of the group was formed of two words. Samuel proposed “Sonica” in honor of the song of the group “Marlene Kuntz”, and Max offered “Subacqueo” in honor of the song of his group “Africa Unite”. Girl Max came up with a combination of both names in the word "Subsonica".
First Album (1997-1999)
In the spring of 1997, the first single, "Istantanee", was released. Right after that the first album “SubsOnicA” was released. In the same year, with the participation of Antonelli Ruggiero, for her album “Registrazioni moderne”, the compositions “Il video sono io” and “Per un'ora d'amore” were recorded, two songs by Matya Bazar. The song “Per un'ora d'amore” was chosen as the title single for the Rudgero album, and the video for this song in which they participated made them popular. In 1998, they gave concerts in Italy, nearly 150 performances from January to October. The singles “Cose che non ho”, “Radioestensioni” and “Preso blu” were also released. The album opens with the song “Come se”, dedicated to Sylvia Baraldini, has traces of the influence of alternative music of the 90s. The "electronic" sounds of such English recording studios as Ninjatune and Mo'Wax, the new rhythmic moves of the Jungle style, the first experiments of the Chemical Brothers group, dauntingly became inspirational examples for the music of Subsonica.
Microchip emozionale and San Remo Festival (1999-2002)
In June 1999, the single “Colpo di pistola” was released, the first single from the album, which was released in September of that year. Part of the album was presented at MTV Day in Bologna, then the last time was played by bassist Pierfunk ("Pierfunk"). After that, he was replaced by Vicio ("Vicio"). In October, the single Liberi Tutti was released, in a duet with Daniele Silvestri (in 2011, this composition was used as the background for the “I Vote” advertising campaign). In 2000, they took part in the San Remo festival, performing the song “Tutti i miei sbagli”, and although they took only eleventh place, this single was the most commercially successful on the days of the festival. The reissue of Microchip emozionale was first a gold disc and later a platinum disc. For the fourth single, "Disco labirinto", a special clip was shot for people with hearing impairment, in which the singer Morgan starred. He was the vocalist of the band "Bluvertigo", whose style influenced the "Subsonica". It was shot by Luca Pastore on the idea of Elastico studio. They received a prize at the MTV Europe Music Award in Stockholm as the best performers in Italy and at the PIM (Italian Music Award) in the nominations for “Best Disc” and “Best Band”.
Amorematico (2002-2004)
After the single "Nuvole rapide" on January 11, 2002, the album "Amorematico" was released, which in just one week became the first in the charts of the best-selling discs and in several days became gold. In this third album, they collaborate with Maurizio Archeli and Cristina Moser, better known as Krisma, in the song “Nuova ossessione” and with Roger Rama in the songs “Nuvole rapide” and “Sole silenzioso”. On February 2, the new Amorematico Tour began with Velvet Club in Rimini and ended on October 11 in Bellinzon (Switzerland). A few days earlier, they received, along with Manuel Anelli, lead singer of Afterhours, Marco Parente and Cristina Don, the Grinzane Cavour Award. In November, after the release of the last single “Gente tranquilla” in a duet with Moroccan rapper Racid, they again won the MTV Europe Music Award as the best Italian artists, and a few days later they won the Italian Music Awards for the graphic project to the Amorematico album and for arranging the song Nuvole Rapide. The year ends with a new platinum disc: 100,000 copies sold.
On February 7, 2003, the double live album Controllo del livello di rombo was released, recorded on a tour with the album Amorematico. Three new songs (“Non chiedermi niente”, “Livido amniotico” in a duet with Veronica and “L'errore”) entered the concert, and the group went on a new four-month tour. It began with Italian stadiums. There were 13,000 spectators in the stands of Forum di Assago, and a video was shot there, which became the next year's DVD Cielo tangenziale ovest. In the spring, they wrote and recorded together with the band “Linea 77” the song “66 (Diabolus in musica)”, which was included in their album “Numb”. Anomalia Subsonica, the official biography written by journalist Paolo Ferrari, was released in October.
Termination of the contract with Mescal Studio and Casasonica Project
On January 11, 2004, the band officially began work on the new album "Terrestre". On February 2, they performed at the Tora! Tora! ”In Mantua, on April 27, recorded a video for the song“ 66 (Diabolus in musica) ”with the band“ Linea 77 ”on Castello Square in Turin, and on July 8 took part in the Traffic Festival at the evening“ Heavens over Turin ” where they played with various of the most significant Turin groups: Africa Unite, Linea 77, Mau Mau, Madaski, Persiana Jones and Fratelli di Soledad. On July 16, they signed a contract with the Italian EMI and at the same time created the label Casasonica, which produces songs by Sikitikis, Cinemavolta, SteelA, Robertina and Gatto Ciliegia contro il Grande Freddo, Petrol and LNRipley. " In September, Mescal released Cielo tangenziale Ovest, and on the 22nd of the same month, the group played at the Concerto per Piero alla Lega dei Furiosi concert, presenting three new songs. In December, the recording of the Terrestre album began. The change of record label was especially unexpected, as the contract with Mescal provided for the recording of other studio albums. Members of the group, distressed by the behavior of the directors of the independent record company, declare that the terms of the contract are fulfilled, presenting EMI two new instrumental albums, which Mescal, on the contrary, called "albums with one noise." The case ended with recriminations. The transition to EMI, as Samuel stated in several interviews of that time, is connected with the group’s desire for greater creative and economic independence.
