Biography
Born on December 12 [24], 1873, in the family of the writer Gleb Ivanovich Uspensky (1843-1902) and Alexandra Vasilyevna Baraeva-Uspenskaya (1845-1906) [1] . The sisters were Vera (1877-1942), in 1899-1908 the Socialist-Revolutionary wife B.V. Savinkov , and Maria (1879-1943), the wife of the architect S. S. Krichinsky . Brother - Boris (1886-1951). In the marriage with Maria Evgenievna Neuberg, the architect A. G. Uspensky had a son German, who died in childhood, until 1907
After graduating from a real school, Alexander Uspensky entered the Institute of Civil Engineers . During training, he often visited the library of the Academy of Arts . During geodesic practice he became interested in drawing. Since 1896, the future architect began to take part in the activities of the underground printing house in Lakhta . In this regard, after graduation in 1898 , he was exiled to the Chernigov province , where he continued to paint [2]
In his architectural design, Alexander Glebovich was a consistent supporter of Art Nouveau . Its main buildings were temples and utilitarian buildings of the military department. The architect's constant passion was English wooden architecture and the work of Charles Voysey . Ouspensky devoted several articles and public lectures to these questions.
He died on March 26 [ April 8 ], 1907 . On the same day, his wife committed suicide. He was buried on the Literary bridges of the Volkovsky Orthodox cemetery . The Russian press did not ignore this tragedy:
A few days ago, the son of the late Gleb Ivanovich Uspensky, civil engineer Alexander Glebovich Uspensky, was taken to the barracks exchange hospital for treatment. Doctors noted inflammation of the cecum in him. The venerable life-surgeon and the head physician of the Dombrowski hospital recognized the need for surgical intervention, and Alexander Glebovich Uspensky underwent surgery, but failed to save his life. He died in the prime of life, only a 25-year-old [3] young man.
His wife could not bear the blow inflicted on her by fate. She madly loved her husband and was confident in the successful outcome of the operation. Arriving home, Marya Uspenskaya locked herself in her room, took out her dead husband's revolver and committed suicide in a heart shot.
