In 1997, after the breakup of his first band, Pinwheel, Ben began recording the demo album You Can Play These Songs with Chords for his solo project titled Death Cab for Cutie. After receiving positive feedback, Gibbard decides to turn the solo project into a full-fledged group. He invites guitarist Christopher Wall, bassist Nick Harmer and drummer Nathan Hood. A year later, the band released their debut album Something About Airplanes via Barsuk Records.
In the early 2000s, continuing his solo career in parallel with the activities in the group, he released two studio and one EP albums as part of the All-Time Quarterback project. In 2009 he recorded the album One Fast Move or I'm Gone together with Jay Farrar. In 2012 , he released a solo album called Former Lives , which reached the 34th position of the Billboard 200 in 2012, and then held that position for two years [1] .

Biography
The early years
Ben Gibbard was born in Bremerton , Washington , where he spent his youth. His high school education saw a rise in the popularity of grunge music in the 1990s [2] . Also, an American writer and poet Jack Kerouac had a great influence on further creativity [3] . In 1994, Ben graduated from Olympic High School, and later studied at the University of Western Washington at the Department of Engineering [4] [5] . The first musical group of young Ben was Pinwheel as a guitarist, which included one album of the same name. But Justin Kennedy soon left the group, and Gibbard in 1997 decided to start his solo project called Death Cab for Cutie . In the same year he wrote music and lyrics for the songs of the upcoming demo album You Can Play These Songs with Chords , but for a live performance, a full band was required. Therefore, he invites guitarist Christopher Wall, bassist Nick Harmer and drummer Nathan Hood. The album receives positive reviews, and the group forms its first composition [2] [4] . In March 1999, the album Something About Airplanes was released - the first studio album of the group, recorded in full strength on the label Barsuk Records [6] .
Death Cab for Cutie and continued solo career
Despite the success and subsequent releases of Death Cab for Cutie, Ben continues his solo career in parallel. From 1999 to 2002 he released his own albums as part of the solo project All-Time Quarterback. He also begins the practice of working together. Ben collaborates with the following musicians and bands: The Long Winters, The American Analog Set, Jenny Lewis, Jay Farrar, Arne van Petegam (Styrofoam), Andrew Kenny and others. But the most fruitful was the collaboration with Jimmy Tamborello (Dntel), first as a guest vocalist in the album Jimmy Life Is Full of Possibilities (2001), and then in a duet in The Postal Service. The debut work of the duo was the album Give Up (2003), warmly received by critics and marked by high sales and gold certification in two countries [2] . In March 2004, Ben released another release, the album Home Volume V , recorded in collaboration with Andrew Kenny in 2002 [7] .
In the spring of 2007, Gibbard made a solo tour of the United States along with David Bazan from the band Pedro the Lion and Jonathan Rice [8] . Ben starred in a short film in the 2009 Short Interviews with the Bastards movie, based on the eponymous short story collection by David Wallace [9] .
In 2008, Ben became engaged to American actress and singer Zoe Deschanel . The couple married in September 2009 near Seattle [10] . But on November 1, 2011, they announced a divorce. [11] Zoe linked this to “irreconcilable differences.” [12] December 12, 2012 they finally divorced [13] .
In 2012, Gibbard released the Former Lives album - the first completely independent collection of songs released under his own name [2] . In 2014, he participated in the recording of the track “Subterranean” of the eighth album of Foo Fighters Sonic Highways [14] .
