The son of a klezmer musician who made his living by playing Jewish weddings. Born in the city of Temir-Khan-Shura, raised in Bobruisk. Cousin of the writer Leo Acceleration .
He graduated from high school and commercial school, was expelled from the institute. Member of the RSDLP since 1908. For revolutionary activity he was in prison and was exiled to the European North.
