History

One of the founders of Opera Software, Jon Stephenson von Techner , left the company on June 30, 2011 due to disagreements with the board of directors and management [6] . In August 2013, he created the company Vivaldi Technologies [7] with an authorized capital of NOK 3 million ($ 477,600) [8] , which was engaged in the development of its own browser.

Vivaldi is designed to meet the needs of users who need more than just a browser [9] . A number of functions, such as a sidebar, a mode for displaying images on a web page, notes, visual tabs, a basket with closed tabs, etc., were performed based on the Opera 12 browser, the latest “classic” version of Opera.

The browser also claims support for online synchronization, an integrated email client , support for extensions, and much more [10] .

In the first 10 days after its appearance, the browser was downloaded half a million times [11] . In just over a month, from January 27 to March 5, 2015, by the time the Technical Preview 2 version was released, Vivaldi had been downloaded more than 700 thousand times [12] .

On April 6, 2016, the first stable version [13] was released . In version 1.1, which was released on April 26, 2016, due to the upgrade of Chromium to version Chromium 50, Windows operating systems were no longer supported up to and including Windows Vista , as well as Mac OS X up to version 10.9, and further browser updates for OS data were stopped [14] .
