Background

In February - April, Yudenich managed to take the cities of Erzurum , Mush and Trebizond . The latter was a very profitable port , which made it possible to deliver reinforcements by sea to the Caucasian front. On May 16 ( 29 ), 1916, the Turks launched an offensive, forcing the Russian troops to leave Mamahatun .
