Description

The coat is golden, the color is uniform throughout the body. The crown is lighter, the limb is dark. The face is dark pink. The body length is about 25-40 cm, the weight of an adult animal is 2-3 kg. [1] [2]

Distribution

The range is limited to small areas on the Atlantic coast of Brazil in the states of Paraiba and Pernambuco , as well as in the state of Alagoas in the north-east of the country. [1] [2]

Classification

The species was described in 1774 by Johann Schreber under the name Simia flavia , but for a long time it was not possible to obtain an animal sample, [3] until in 2006 a description of the neotype was published . [1] The authors confirmed the description made by Schreber and assigned a new name to the species, Cebus flavius . In the same year, a similar species was described, Cebus queirozi , [2] which was later synonymous with Cebus flavius . [4] [1] [5]

In 2011, several species from the genus Cebus , including Cebus flavius , were isolated in a separate genus Sapajus . [6] [7]

Population Status

The species is extremely rare, the range is very limited and fragmented. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has assigned the conservation status "On the verge of extinction." In the wild, it is estimated that only about 180 individuals remain. [four]
