Biography

The younger son of the King of Jerusalem Jean de Brienne and his third wife Berengaria Leonskaya (1204-1237), nephew of Blanca of Castile and cousin Louis IX .

In 1244, together with his brothers and sisters, he was sent to the court of Louis. In 1258 he was appointed Kravchim of France. In 1263 he traveled to England at the invitation of his cousin Prince Edward , with whom he maintained good relations. Participated in the crusade of Louis IX in Tunisia, during which his brother Alphons Acre died .

In 1272 he participated in the embassy in Rome to Pope Gregory X. In 1276 Philip III was sent to Castile to protect the rights of the children of Fernando de la Cerda to the throne and to achieve the return of the dowry of the Blanca of France . Helped Blanque and several supporters of the House de la Cerdat to escape from Castile [1] .

In 1279-1281 he ruled Champagne in the absence of Edmund Lancaster , husband of Regent Blanca d'Artois . In 1280, he led a brutal suppression of the revolt of the citizens of Proven , angered by taxes, who collected to finance the campaign of Philip III in Navarre, and killed the mayor. A significant number of inhabitants of a rich trading city were executed or expelled, and Provins itself was deprived of its privileges and it fell into neglect. In 1281, Lancaster declared an amnesty, but failed to restore the destroyed economy [2] [3] [4] .

Jean de Brienne was one of 38 witnesses during the process of canonizing Louis in 1282.
