Biography
The main narrative source telling about Theudelapia is the “ History of the Lombards ” by Paul Deacon [1] [2] [3] .
Theudelapius was one of the two sons of the ruler of the Spoletal Duchy of Faroald I [4] . After the death of his father, who died in 591, Ariulf [5] [6] gained power over Spoleto. Probably, the sons of the deceased duke were still underage and could not inherit the possession of their father [7] [8] .
Ariulf died in 601, after which between the two sons of Faroald I a struggle broke out for power over the Duchy of Spoletus. The victory in the battle between the brothers was won by Theudelapius, who became the new ruler of Spoleto [1] [2] [6] [9] . It is not known how King Agilulf reacted to such events in one of the largest Lombard duchies. The absence of information about this in the work of Pavel Deacon may indicate that either Teudelapius acted with the consent of Aguulf, or the dukes of Spoleto were already strong enough at that time to ignore the monarch’s possible negative reaction to the feud [8] .
Although Theudelapius owned the Duchy of Spolet for half a century, very little is known about his rule [10] . Perhaps a small amount of information about the activities of the duke in medieval sources is due to the absence in his reign of significant military conflicts in which he would be involved [11] . It is assumed that, taking advantage of the weakness of royal power, he, like the Duke of Benevento Arechis I , pursued an independent policy, with little regard for the interests of the Lombard monarchs. Probably Theudelapia should be considered more as an independent ruler than a faithful royal vassal [7] [9] [12] .
Traditions call Theudelapia the customer of the construction of the ducal palace and some other structures. Although most of these buildings can not be attributed to the first half of the 7th century, it is possible that later buildings were erected in those places where there were buildings erected on the initiative of Theudelapius [8] [9] [13] .
The exact date of death of Theudelapia is not known. This event dates from the middle of the 7th century [1] (possibly 653 year [7] [10] [12] ). The new ruler of the Duchy of Spoletus was Atto [2] [8] [9] [14] .
