Biography

Play career

In the 1989 draft , the Winnipeg Jets was chosen by the 6th round under number 109, but did not play a single game for them. In 1994 he signed a contract with the Los Angeles Kings . Despite the fact that the player spent 6 years in the club system, he failed to become an important player for the "kings". Moreover, the player often had to play for the farm clubs of "Los Angeles". In the summer of 2000, Bailsma, as a free agent, moved to Anaheim Mighty Dax , where he became an alternative captain . The highest achievement as a player for him was participation in the 2003 Stanley Cup final. After the 2003/04 season, which due to injuries ended for the player ahead of time, Bailma completed his performances. Due to the lack of pronounced game skills, his main task on the ice has always been “the killing of playing time” in the minority .

Coaching career

Having started his coaching job, Bailma alternately managed to work as an assistant head coach at the AHL club Cincinnati Mayty Dax (2004/05), then at New York Islanders (2005/06). Then he moved to Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins to a similar position, where after two full seasons (2006-2008) he took the place of head coach.

February 16, 2009 for 25 matches before the end of the regular season, he was appointed acting head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins [1] . After the successful completion of the regular season, when 18 victories in 25 games were won, Bilesma was approved as the head coach of the penguins [2] . And on June 12, 2009, being the youngest coach in the NHL at that time, he led the Pittsburgh Penguins to the third Stanley Cup in history. The opponent in that final series was Mike Babcock , under whose leadership he, being a player himself, played in the 2003 Stanley Cup final.

At the end of the 2010/11 season , he was recognized as the best coach, largely for having managed to bring Pittsburgh Penguins to the playoffs despite the severe injuries of two team leaders Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby .

June 28, 2013 he was appointed head coach of the US team to participate in the 2014 Olympics [3] . In the games themselves, the national team was limited to only 4th place.

On June 6, 2014, Jim Rutherford, the new general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins , fired Dan Baysm from his position as head coach [4] . After the championship in 2009, “ Pittsburgh ” under the leadership of Bylsma was able to win a total of 4 playoff series out of 9 in the period from 2010 to 2014 [5] .
