Biography
Petr Ivanovich Shangin was born in Beloyarsky fortress as the second son of five in the family of a clerical employee. The exact date of birth is not known, 1741 , 1745 or 1748 are indicated. Since childhood, he was a disciple of a doctor, in 1766 he was sent to Moscow. He studied at the Medical Faculty of Moscow University Shangin. From 1770 he worked in a hospital in Barnaul , in 1774 he became the head of the Zmeinogorsky hospital.
Since 1785, Shangin took part in a large expedition in the Western Altai , made maps (for the first time he depicted the mountain ranges of the Altai, the upper reaches of the Charysh and the Katun ), described the flora and fauna. Discovered 145 jasper and agate deposits. In 1793, Peter Simon Pallas (with whom Shangin corresponded) translated into German and published notes of Shangin (without a card). On August 31, 1795, Shangin was elected a corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences [1] .
From 1792 to 1799, Peter Ivanovich managed the Salair mountain company, and from 1799 he was a member of the Barnaul Mining Council. In 1808 he reached the rank of Bergrath 5th class.
Together with his brother Semen Ivanovich (1755–?), P. I. Shangin founded the first botanical garden in Siberia.
In 1808, P. S. Pallas sold his huge herbarium collection containing samples of P. I. Shangin, G. V. Steller , I. G. Gmelin , and abroad to Aylmer Lambert , thereby violating the charter of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. Parts of the Shangin Herbarium, which remained in Barnaul, were transferred in 1826 to Karl Friedrich von Ledebour .
Petr Ivanovich Shangin died on June 3 (15), 1816 in Barnaul.
Named in honor of P. I. Shangin
One of the streets of Barnaul is named after Shangin.
In 2014, the name of the scientist named the highest peak of the Altai Territory (in the Korgon ridge system) - Mayak Shangin [2] .
