My struggle

“My Struggle” ( German: Mein Kampf , MFA [maɪ̯n kampf] , transl. “Mein Kampf” ) is an autobiographical book of the leader of the Nazi party, Adolf Hitler . In his work, Adolf describes the process of his becoming an anti-Semite , outlines his political beliefs and plans for the future of Germany. Volume 1 of My Struggle was published in 1925, and Volume 2 in 1926. The editor of the book was Hitler's deputy, Rudolf Hess .

Writing History

The first volume of the book ( German: Eine Abrechnung ) was published on July 18, 1925 . The second volume, "The National Socialist Movement" ( German: Die nationalsozialistische Bewegung ) - in 1926. Initially, the book was called "4.5 years of the struggle against lies, stupidity and cowardice." Publisher Max Amann , finding the title too long, reduced it to two words: "My struggle."

Hitler dictated the text of the book to Emil Moris during his imprisonment in Landsberg prison and, later, in July 1924, to Rudolf Hess . According to the publisher of Hurst & Blackett, the proceeds from the second edition of Mine Campf went to the benefit of the Red Cross [1] .

In 1928, a sequel was written - “ The Second Book ” or “Zweites Buch” ( German: Zweites Buch ), which was not published during Hitler's lifetime.

Key Ideas

The book reflects the ideas whose implementation was the Second World War [2] . Hitler used the main points of the then popular ideology of the “Jewish threat” about the monopoly seizure of world power by Jews. For example, it is argued that the international language of Esperanto could become part of the Jewish conspiracy [3] .

Also from the book you can find out the details of Hitler's childhood and how his political views were formed. So, living in Austria-Hungary , he makes a distinction between German nationalism and Austrian "Habsburg" patriotism, giving preference to the first. He saw a great danger to the German community of Austria-Hungary in the “ Slavization ” of this country, where the Slavic centers ( Laibach , Lemberg , Prague ) were growing, while the Austrian Germans gradually lost their positions. In this light, he formed a negative attitude towards parliamentarism and social democracy , which were unable to defend the German minority. In addition, Hitler’s anti-Semitism was reinforced by the fact that the percentage of Jews among the leaders of Austrian Social Democracy was high, and the Social Democratic newspaper was mainly in the hands of the Jews. It was hit in the back by Jewish Social Democracy that Hitler explained the loss of the German Empire and Austria-Hungary in the First World War . He also considered the Weimar Republic a “Jewish democratic empire” ( German: Das jüdisch-demokratische Reich ). As a child, Hitler believed that the distinction between Jews is possible only on religious grounds, and besides, on a racial plane, a significant part of Jews mixed with European nations. Hitler also admits that in his early years he did not hate Jews by reading anti-Semitic literature, he noticed many outdated opinions and unscientific arguments. Later, he changes his point of view and sees a clear ethnic and ideological difference between Germans and Jews.

One of the most important points of Hitler’s ideology of national socialism was to oppose Marxism , while the latter was associated with Jewishness. The book often contains accusations of Marxism with the argument that this ideology serves as an instrument in the hands of the Jews in order to destroy the entire human culture, in this case the Aryan, for the purpose of world domination of all mankind. In support of the ethnic composition of the distributors of Marxism, an argument is given about the Jewish origin of the authors of social democratic brochures, which Hitler bought in his youth in order to study the red ideology. Also, according to Hitler, Marxism rejects the individuality of man and the role of the individual in the development of culture, since it is individuals who are the main engines of historical processes, instead creating a monotonous human mass. Marxism also disputes the importance of nationality and race, which, according to Hitler, takes away all the prerequisites for its existence and the culture it creates.

Chapter XI of the first part of the book clearly expresses Hitler's racist worldview, dividing people by origin. Races are in a struggle for existence, and the mixture between them is disastrous. Hitler considered the highest race Aryans , consisting of Germanic and Romanesque elements. A distinctive feature of this race is a light skin color. Her high position is due to the fact that science , technology and art are supposedly a product of the creativity of this race alone:

 Aryans were the founders of humanity. 

Hitler called Jews the opposite of Aryans: if Aryan is characterized by idealism and self-sacrifice , then Jews are characterized by selfishness and self-preservation instinct . The "myth" about the special talents of the Jews is based on the opinion that Jews know how to accumulate and reproduce the culture of other nations without their own.

 Jews were never nomads, but parasitized on the bodies of other nations. 

In chapter IV of the second part, Hitler replaces parliamentarism with the principle of leaderism , when everything is decided not by the majority, but by one person standing at different levels of the “people's state” ( German Der völkische Staat ). Elements of parliamentarism persist, but play an auxiliary, deliberative role under the leader ( Fuhrer ). Thus, the corrupting rule of the masses, the majority and the quantity is opposed to the supremacy and responsibility of the individual. The problem of parliamentarism as such consists, according to Hitler, in the absence of a specific person responsible for a political decision made by a certain group of people.

In chapter VII of the second part, Hitler explains the meaning of Nazi symbolism:

 The red color represents the social ideas inherent in our movement. White is the idea of ​​nationalism. The hoe-shaped cross ( German Hakenkreuz ) is the mission of the struggle for the victory of the Aryans ( German des arischen Menschen ) and at the same time for the victory of creative work. 

Hitler also talks about the need for the coming war, justifying it with the need to expand living space . The biggest danger for Germany, in his opinion, is France , which, on the one hand, already had the experience of rejection ( Alsace - Lorraine ) and the occupation of German lands (under Napoleon I ), and, on the other hand, pursues an internal policy of racial mixing:

 France is now undergoing so strong Negro influences racially that it will soon be possible to speak of the emergence of a new African state on European territory. 

Hitler perceived Russia more as a space for territorial expansion, the state core of which was once the German elements supplanted or destroyed by Jews during the Bolshevik revolution:

 Russia lived at the expense of the German core in its upper strata of the population. Now this core is completely destroyed to the end. The place of the Germans was taken by the Jews. But just as Russians cannot throw off the yoke of Jews ( German das Joch der Juden ) with their own forces, so only Jews cannot keep this huge state under their control for a long time. Jews themselves are by no means an element of organization, but rather an enzyme of decomposition ( German: Ferment der Dekomposition ). This gigantic eastern state is inevitably doomed to destruction. All prerequisites have already ripened to this. The end of Jewish domination in Russia will also be the end of Russia as a state.

Popularity before World War II

Before the 1932 elections , as a result of which Hitler gained power in Germany, the book sold rather sluggishly. 54,000 units were sold in 1930, 90,351 units in 1932 , and 854,127 units in 1934 . In subsequent years, the publisher Franz-Eher-Verlag for each reprint of the book accrued to Hitler from 1 to 2 million marks [4] . Hitler made a fortune on the book [5] . The book as compulsory literature was given out free of charge not only to "party comrades", but also since 1936 - to newlyweds at marriage instead of the Bible [6] . Even before the outbreak of World War II , English, French, Russian [7] and other translations appeared, and about 500 thousand translated copies were sold. In the USSR, the translation of Grigory Zinoviev was published in 1933 in a limited edition for study by party workers [8] . A full translation into English was made by James Murphy (Dr James Murphy) in 1936 by order of the German Ministry of Propaganda [5] .

Post-World War II editions

In 2005, the book entered the list of book bestsellers in Turkey with sales, according to various sources, from 50 to 100 thousand copies. for three months. After that, the book was withdrawn from sale [9] [10] [11] [12] .

In 2009, the Main Campf manga was released in Japan [13] . In April 2017, Japan was officially allowed to use the Mein Kampf as an illustration for textbooks in schools (but not as a means of promoting racism, which is prohibited) [14] [15] . Chinese Foreign Minister disapproved of this fact [16] .

For the first time after Hitler's death, she left in Germany in 2016. In 2016, Russian language was prepared, prepared by researchers at the Institute of Contemporary History, Munich - Berlin , a two-volume commented edition of a book with a volume of 2000 pages, where 700 pages were the original text and another 1300 pages - a scientific critical commentary, which presents a refutation of the theses put forward by Hitler [17] [18] [19] . Although the initial circulation was 4,000 copies, nevertheless, according to the representative of the Institute for Contemporary History of Munich - Berlin, Zimone Paulmihl, from the beginning of January to April 2016 the book became a bestseller and approximately 47,500 copies were sold [19] [20] . For the whole of this year, according to the director of the Institute for Contemporary History of Munich - Berlin, Andreas Wirsching , 85 thousand copies were sold [21] . In January 2017, the sixth edition of the book was published [22] .

Russian-language editions

The first attempt in the USSR to widely publish some chapters from Mein Kampf was made by the Military History Journal in 1990 (translation by Lt. Col. N. Vladimirov) [23]

The first mass full publication of the book in Russia (not counting the limited edition in the USSR for party workers in the early 1930s ) was carried out by T-Oko publishing house in 1992 (in the same translation by Zinoviev). Recently, the book has been published several times:

Use in the hoax of "Resentment Research"

In 2018, a group of scholars, in the framework of the mystery “Resentment Research”, rewrote the 12th chapter of “Mein Kampf” (3,000 words) in terms of third-wave feminism and gender studies and sent under the guise of a scientific article with the headline “Our struggle is my struggle” “Our Struggle is My Struggle: Solidarity Feminism as an Intersectional Reply to Neoliberal and Choice Feminism” ) in the quarterly peer-reviewed scientific journal Affilia after which the article was evaluated by reviewers and editors and was accepted for publication, [24] [25] [26] [27] [28] [29] [30] [31] [32] [33] [34] [35 ] [36] however, did not manage to be published before the subsequent exposure of the hoax.

Book Copyright

Until 1945, copyrights to the book belonged to the publishing house of the NSDAP Franz-Eher-Verlag [4] , located in Bavaria [37] [38] . Until the beginning of 2016, copyright for the publication of the book belonged to Bavaria , which received it from the United States in 1946 [37] . In the Bavarian government, the Ministry of Finance dealt with copyright issues for the book [37] . Since then, the Ministry of Finance has not given permission to publish this book and has declared its intention to continue pursuing the same policy [37] . The ministry also practiced appeals to the authorized bodies of other states with a request to ban the publication of the book and its free sale [37] . The copyright on this book in Germany expired on December 31, 2015 [39] [40] [41] .

Ban in Russia

In accordance with the Federal Law of July 25, 2002 “On Countering Extremist Activities” No. 114-ФЗ, the distribution of extremist materials is prohibited on the territory of the Russian Federation (these also include publications by NSDAP leaders, which means Adolf Hitler’s book “My Struggle” ), as well as their production or storage for distribution [42] [43] [44] .

In 2006, the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation took the initiative to create a list of banned books, in all versions of which there is an essay by Hitler [45] .

In July 2009, the historical website of Chronos was blocked for several days at the request of the Main Directorate of Internal Affairs of St. Petersburg; the reason is an abstract of the book “Mein Kampf” [46] [47] posted on the website.

In March 2010, by a decision of the Kirovsky District Court of Ufa, the book was recognized as extremist material in the Russian Federation [48] .

 The book contains elements of Hitler's autobiography outlining the ideas of national socialism, expresses a militaristic worldview and justifies discrimination and the annihilation of persons of non-Aryan races, reflects the ideas that became the realization of the beginning of World War II 

- the report says the country's main supervisory authority. On behalf of the prosecutor's office of the Republic of Bashkortostan, the prosecutor's office of the Kirovsky district of the city of Ufa conducted an audit of the implementation of legislation on countering extremist activities, as a result of which the fact of the free distribution of the book “Mein Kampf” was confirmed. In this regard, the prosecutor sent a lawsuit to the court to recognize the book as extremist material. The Prosecutor General’s Office indicated that

 in accordance with Art. 1 of the Federal Law “On Countering Extremist Activities”, the assignment of documents to the work of the leaders of the National Socialist Workers Party of Germany is the basis for automatic recognition of them as extremist materials and does not require additional argumentation and examination. 

The Kirovsky district court agreed with the position of the prosecutor's office and recognized the book of Adolf Hitler as extremist material [49] . On April 13, 2010, the court decision entered into force [50] and the book was entered on the Federal List of Extremist Materials (No. 604).

In July 2010, a court in the Tsentralny District of Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Khabarovsk Krai, decided to restrict access to Librusek Internet resources (the decision mistakenly spelled lib.rus), thelib.ru, zhurnal.ru, Internet Archive , etc. ., which hosted extremist materials, including the book "My Struggle" [51] .

On February 5, 2014, a federal judge of the Central District Court of Khabarovsk [52] Romanova Irina Aleksandrovna [53] ruled to satisfy the prosecutor’s lawsuit banning access to Wikipedia due to the fact that this article previously referred to the book “My Struggle” [54] ] .
